Olympic Technology Spotlight: P2i Nano-Coating

httpv://youtu.be/BSW9svih5Ro

There is a lot of technology that is being used in this summer’s Olympic Games and KineticShift is looking to spotlight much of it. In the water it can mean being water resistant and P2i has developed a liquid repellent nano-coating technology. The company has partnered with UK Sport, in conjunction with British Cycling and Sailing to provide this coating for bike components and sailing harnesses.

The company also worked with the Australian Canoe Slalom team (as shown in the video above) to provide protection for spray skirts.

Australian Olympic Kayakers Use 3D to Model their Craft

At the Olympic level, kayaks are often custom fitted to the athlete. The Australian Olympic Kayak team enlisted a Creaform 3D scanner and modeling from U.S.-based Geomatic. Modeling ensures a custom fit in the Kayak, and better controls for the slalom event. Continue reading Australian Olympic Kayakers Use 3D to Model their Craft

Adidas Looks For the Gold

This week we noted that Adidas had introduced a pair of lightweight golf shoes that seem based on its line of running shoes. But the company also apparently is looking for gold of sorts with shoes that will be worn by athletes competing at the Olympics – however it won’t be until the summer games in 2016.

Golf hasn’t been an official Olympic sport since the 1904 games in St. Louis. In the meantime Adidas has introduced the new Tour360 ATV golf shoes, which will be worn by athletes competing at this year’s Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Anne.

And this didn’t stop Adidas Golf from celebrating the return to the Olympics in the video below. Video after the jump

Weekend Reading List (7.21.2012): Olympic Technology, Steel Bikes, Pre-Ride Check List, Surfing Goat

Olympic Technology

From the Washington Post: Olympics 2012: Innovations going for the gold
When you think innovation and the Summer Olympics, you probably don’t think of architecture, medicine, media and fashion.

You should, since the innovations featured at the games are relevant in all of these fields. In terms of pure technology, the 2008 Beijing Games featured new computerized scoring and time-keeping technology and new motion-sensing and GPS tracking technologies. So, what are some of the most exciting innovations to watch out for at the London 2012 Summer Games? Getting the Pole to the Olympics

Pole-vaulters like Mary Saxer, in the car, face a challenge in transporting their equipment, which can stretch 17 feet long (Photo: NY Times)

As the athletes competing in the 2012 Olympic Games begin to descend on London we were left pondering how some of the athletes get their equipment and gear to the games – not to mention other sporting events. Traveling with a shot put probably is a bit annoying, and of course the cyclists don’t have it easy either.

But recently The New York Times noted “For Pole-Vaulters, Clearing the Bar Is the Easy Part.” This had us thinking, how exactly do you travel with a 17-foot pole? While getting it to London is probably a nightmare, so is just getting it to the local track to practice vaulting! Continue reading Getting the Pole to the Olympics

Brazilian Olympic Equestrian Team Using American Made Saddle Pads

The controversy over the U.S. Olympic team wearing uniforms made overseas continues, but this week we hard that the Brazilian Olympic Equestrian Team will be riding in the London Olympic Games with saddle pads produced by Wilker’s Custom Horse Products of Cool Springs, Tennessee. The company produced dozens of white custom saddle pads with the kelly green and yellow trim and piping of the team, while another embroidery business out of state will add the Brazilian flag.

This just shows how international the games have become.

Olympic Attendees Power Lights

Given the amount of athletic competition that will take part in the Olympic Games it would be interesting to see how much power could be generated by the athletes. Unfortunately that isn’t actually possible in this year’s games, but many of the attendees will be powering some of the walkway lights leading to the Olympic Park.

Those attending the game might not know they’re generating the power, but they will do so simply by walking to see the stadium. Twelve special energy harvesting floor tiles, which were produced by renewable energy company Pavegen Systems, were situated along the walkway connecting the West Ham Station to the Greenway walking route to the Olympic Park will help light the way. With more 12 million impressions on the tiles are expected, it could generate 72 million joules of energy. That’s enough to power a small electric car for 397 laps on the Olympic track. It might not seem like much, but this is generated simply by people walking over those tiles. Continue reading Olympic Attendees Power Lights

Future Olympic Uniforms Could be Spray On

The now-banned LZR Racer swinsuit

The Olympic Games don’t begin for over a week and already there is much controversy – not on the fields of competition but rather on what is covering the athletes. In the United States some lawmakers are upset that the attire to be worn by the U.S. Olympic Team was made in China.

Then there are the swim suits that will be worn in the pool – and could be a replay of the now-banned 2008 LZR Racer skinsuits. Likewise the golf ball inspired track suits are getting much attention. Continue reading Future Olympic Uniforms Could be Spray On

Cycling in the Gold

The Olympic bicycle road race is less than two weeks away and while only one man and one woman will walk away with gold, Shimano is providing 22 sponsored Olympic cyclists with gold-adorned road shoes to encourage them to go for it!

This is really just a cosmetic change to the SH-R315 shoe, but to get a pair you’ll have to be one of those 22 racers. One rider who won’t likely get to wear a pair in the games will be Samuel Sánchez, the 2008 gold medalist, as he crashed last week in a stage of the Tour de France and was forced to retir with a broken finger and badly bruised upper back.

For the rest of us, we’ll just have to “settle” for the SH-R315

Rowers Suit Up With American Made Uniforms

As we’ve noted previously there has been much outrage from many U.S. lawmakers that some of the uniforms to used beginning next week in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London were made in China; however, we’ll continue to report on the uniforms and kits that are American made.

The Washington Post noted this week that the Rowing teams will be wearing American made kits. The men’s and women’s rowing teams will be outfitted by Philadelphia-based Boathouse Sports, which has its manufacturing done in the USA.

USA Cycling Unveils Kits

While much is made about where some of the American uniforms and team kits for the upcoming Olympics were made, we have to say the cycling uniforms look very nice. The U.S. Cycling Team officially unveiled its uniforms this week. The road, track and mountain bike kits were designed by SKINS while Nike worked with freestyle legend Bob Haro to design the BMX collection. Continue reading USA Cycling Unveils Kits
