Vargo BOT Water Bottle Cooking Pot

The Vargo BOT is not some sort of robot that will cook dinner for you after you’ve gone hiking. But it will allow you to carry water to a campsite and cook in the same vessel. Basically the Vargo BOT is a titanium water bottle and cooking pot in a single, lightweight package.

Unlike most cooking pots this one is designed to carry water without spilling liquid all over everything during a hike, and unlike water bottles this is safe and stable for cooking. It fits in most backpack water bottle pockets, while the screw-top lid can be turned upside-down for cooking. The temperature resistant O-ring won’t melt even when exposed to high heat. In other words, a perfect solution that means one less thing to carry.

Olympic Attendees Power Lights

Given the amount of athletic competition that will take part in the Olympic Games it would be interesting to see how much power could be generated by the athletes. Unfortunately that isn’t actually possible in this year’s games, but many of the attendees will be powering some of the walkway lights leading to the Olympic Park.

Those attending the game might not know they’re generating the power, but they will do so simply by walking to see the stadium. Twelve special energy harvesting floor tiles, which were produced by renewable energy company Pavegen Systems, were situated along the walkway connecting the West Ham Station to the Greenway walking route to the Olympic Park will help light the way. With more 12 million impressions on the tiles are expected, it could generate 72 million joules of energy. That’s enough to power a small electric car for 397 laps on the Olympic track. It might not seem like much, but this is generated simply by people walking over those tiles. Continue reading Olympic Attendees Power Lights

The now-banned LZR Racer swinsuit

The Olympic Games don’t begin for over a week and already there is much controversy – not on the fields of competition but rather on what is covering the athletes. In the United States some lawmakers are upset that the attire to be worn by the U.S. Olympic Team was made in China.

Then there are the swim suits that will be worn in the pool – and could be a replay of the now-banned 2008 LZR Racer skinsuits. Likewise the golf ball inspired track suits are getting much attention. Continue reading Future Olympic Uniforms Could be Spray On

Armor Fit For a Hero

A knight is just one type of potential hero who suited up in armor, just as many of our brave soldiers today wear a type of armor. But even for a hero not heading into battle armor can come in handy. Marc Ellis saw the need for armor for a different kind of hero, namely the GoPro HD Hero 2 action camera.

Ellis wasn’t satisfied with what on the market and produced his own housing made of aluminum and stainless steel. It is reportedly waterproof to 300 feet – compared to GoPro’s own case which can handle 200 feet. The case also features a quartz lens port, and includes nine mounting points, so it ups the ante from the official cases in both counts. The Hero Armor is currently in development and Ellis is raising money on Kickstater. Video after the jump

Adidas Gets Adapt and in Motion

This week Adidas unveiled its new natural running shoe collection, a first for the company, with the release of the adipure Motion for beginners to go anaturale, the adipure Gazelle for intermediate runners, and the adipure Adapt for advanced natural guns. The line of shoes is engineered to promote pure and natural movement to help runners safely and gradually improve their speed, strength and performance through minimalist running.

This is accomplished as the adipure range offers varying heel gradients to help strengthen the foot’s musculoskeletal system. The Motion, offers just an 11mm drop, which is reportedly the ideal “first step” for natural running, while the Gazelle takes it down to 7mm. Finally the Adapt, which weights just 4.5ounces, takes it to 4mm for advanced natural runners. The shoes were created through stress analysis mapping using 500 sensors on a bare foot to measure where the foot stretches during impact, and this helped determine where it requires more freedom along with more support. Stoic Tent for Tall People

Tents are a lot more than just sheets of canvas and a few poles these days, and there continues to be a lot of innovation in cover for those looking to get back to nature. The Stoic Arx X17 is one designed for those taller campers looking for a bit more space. It takes up 28 square feet of space, but allows for campers up to 6’8” to streth out.

The mesh body provides good cross ventilation, making this a true three season tent. It features carbon fiber brow pre-bent poles to provide adequate headroom while offering gear lifts that are ideal for stashing some extra gear.

What the pros racers ride in mountain bike races is often unlike any bicycle most consumers will ride. But another type of pro rides a very serious bike – namely the patrol officer. This year Safariland and Kona introduced a Patrol Bike 29er for bicycle patrol officers. It was unveiled earlier this year at SHOT Show in January, and officially introduced at the International Police Mountain Bike Show Association Conference in May.

Reebok Zigs and Zags Again with Shark

Sharks supposedly have rows of teeth, which allows them to take a serious bite into their prey. The Reebok Zigtech Shark can eat up the road much the same way. It features a traction segment on the sole that is inspired by shark teeth to give runners excellent traction and durability, while the 20-degree angles are designed to promote sheering and horizontal cushioning. The mesh upper, which is inspired by a shark gill, also offers synthetic overlays for breathable support.

It might be safe to go back in the water, but on the road you’re opponents won’t know how you caught them. Video and more images after the jump
