TRAINR Links Wearables to Fitness Regime

FOCUSTRAINRWearables have become popular. Juniper Research forecasts $19 billion in revenue for the market by 2018. But with many health monitors and wearable devices there is a divide between fitness monitoring (and smart wearable devices), and getting coached on a training regimen. FOCUS: TRAINR is a newly-released app that links between your Samsung Galaxy Gear watch and compatible smartphones.

Where many fitness monitoring devices track cardiovascular exercise such as steps and climbing stairs, TRAINR also logs the use of body weight training and resistance training. The app provides trainer-designed workouts tailored to each user based on preferences. Additional monitoring comes from TRAINR’s proprietary software and algorithm, coupled with the motion sensors of a smartwatch such as the Samsung Galaxy Gear. The sensors are used to identify, track and record user movements through workouts — from recording repetitions, sets and rest periods.

“TRAINR is a leading fitness software innovation for quantified-self wearables in an ecosystem on the cusp of explosive growth,” said Cavan Canavan, CEO and co-founder of FOCUS, in a corporate statement. “Our flagship product TRAINR unlocks the potential of a fitness monitoring device to serve as a personal trainer by providing guided workouts whether users are at home or on the go. No other product on the market does what TRAINR can and we’re proud to be able to enrich the experience users have with their wearables, starting with the Galaxy Gear.”

The app launches first for the Galaxy Gear as a trial download in the Samsung Apps store. Planned future versions for other wearables are on the company roadmap. The launch version is free, though a premium-version will come with subscription. Pricing will be determined at a later date. TRAINR is compatible with Galaxy Gear and Galaxy Note 3, as well as Galaxy S3 and S4 running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.
