Speed Projection

Most cyclists have some sort of cycle computer. Whether it’s an app on an iPhone or Android smartphone, or a GPS device from Garmin, your miles are logged. But when on the bike sometimes the sun glares on the screen and it’s difficult to make out your speed. Likewise, after dark your screen may not be easy to see as well. A new Dynamic Bike Headlight, in development, projects your speed on the ground ahead of you, which also provides a light to increase visibility.

The Dynamic Bike Headlight runs on a Raspberry Pi processor, which is a tiny and inexpensive processor. It uses a small projector mounted on the handlebars to project light. The Dynamic Bike Headlight is still in early stages. Creator Matt Richardson is video blogging about it’s progress, and other activities. In a video he shows that the light is still in its raw form, with the processor and battery mounted to a board in the triangle of the bike. He doesn’t say what kind of projector, or how many lumens it throws out. Our guess is that the light will use a Pico Projector, which is a small projector with a bright light capability. In the video Richardson mentions battery life, which he’ll have to work out as well as getting the size down. The interesting thing about this light is that it projects your speed onto the ground in front of you, where you tend to look while biking. It is possible that the light will display additional information, such as GPS, in future builds before it comes to market.
