There are plenty of wearable devices that can track activity as well as calorie intake. However the actual tracking isn’t actually accurate because these devices – including heart rate monitors – can’t determine an individual’s specific metabolism and thus can’t really determine how fast one is really burning calories. While the devices aren’t technically guessing, the results aren’t 100 percent accurate, and this is why some users don’t see the results they think they should be getting.
To create a more accurate reading researchers at Arizona State University have developed the Breezing portable metabolism tracker, a pocket-sized gizmo with a small mouthpiece. It utilizes an indirect calorimeter to analyze the carbon dioxide and nitrogen content in the user’s exhalations and this in turn can be used to determine the amount of heat that the body produces. This data can be sent via Bluetooth to a pair Android or iOS device where an app can actually figure out how many calories the user is burning that day. But unlike wearable devices the Breezing can also determine if the user’s body is burning carbohydrates or fats.
The researchers have since looked to launch a business and is now raising funds via Indiegogo. Let’s hope they don’t “blow” the money they raise!
