Sunday Q&A: Making Sense of Golf Strokes

While most of us may never have a swing like the golf pros, today there are plenty of tools that can help improve the swing. In the old days it just meant endless practicing but today that practice can include a digital helper in the form of a wearable sensor on the glove.

The GolfSense provides real time response, and Jason Fass, CEO of GolfSense tells us how it can improve your swing.

KineticShift: There are numerous methods for monitoring the swing, but most of these seem to be more passive. Does wearing the sensor provide a more accurate feedback on what a golfer might be doing wrong?
Jason Fass: GolfSense provides incredibly accurate, real-time data collection and visual feedback for your golf swing. The small glove-worn sensor collects hundreds of data points during your golf swing and presents the results in an easy-to-use and interpret interface to help you improve your game. By being on the glove (versus on the shaft) GolfSense is able to incorporate your wrist movements in the calculations. This is a critical aspect that most swing analysis tools such as video are unable to do.

KS: How exactly was this technology developed? And was this something that wasn’t readily available prior to the days of smartphone?
JF: We spent years building our “Motion Engine” so that we could accurately capture data from multiple sensors simultaneously. Now that the world has moved (or is moving) to smartphones, we’re able to develop streamlined products such as GolfSense that stream data to an application. This means you don’t need to wear a computer on your wrist, since you have one in your pocket (your smartphone).

KS: And unlike with a video or other software system that records the swing, this actually provides feedback that is available in real time so golfers can react immediately?
FS: Absolutely. Video is old school! We’re now living in a world where you can swing your club and instantly see a complete 3D model of that swing and move around it in 360 degrees. And as if that’s not cool enough, you can dig in even deeper for further, data based, analysis for things like tempo, plane comparison, speed, and more.

KS: How are users of the device reacting? Have many seen improvement in their game?
FS: People are loving it. We’re getting emails every day about how golfers are improving their game as a result of using GolfSense. It’s amazing how being able to really visualize your swing can have an impact. We’ve been overwhelmed with the demand for GolfSense this year.

KS: Finally, what can we expect next from GolfSense?
JF: We’re constantly adding features to the software. That’s what’s so great about GolfSense. The product, data, drills, and tips get better over time. We’ve partnered with some of the best players and coaches in the game to help with our product development. Look for much much more in the way of drills and tips coming to GolfSense soon.

Thank you to Jason for talking with us
