An increase in biking calls for an increase in places to park your bikes. We don’t see to many of those multi-bike parking structures anymore, they take up too much space. But there are lots of new options coming out that take up little space, and are kinder to bikes.
Sportworks, a company based in Woodinville, Wash., has two new bike racks constructed with a protective bumper. The Tofino, a squared arch; and the Westport, a U-shaped arch; allow for one or two bikes to lean and be locked against the frame. Both racks are bolted into the cement for safety and security.
Both racks are part of Sportworks’ No Scratch Bike Rack line. Details on what makes the racks safe for bikes to rub up against them were not offered. Sportworks did say the No Scratch Bike Racks are “Red List” compliant, meaning the racks meet the material sourcing criteria of the Living Building Challenge and Leadership in Energy and Environment (LEED) certifications. Sportworks manufactures its entire bike parking line of products in Woodinville, Washington. The company uses post-industrial recycled materials and non-toxic finishes.
No Scratch Bike Racks cost between $200 and $300, and are geared toward installation at colleges, universities, small businesses, office and residential buildings, sports arenas, communities and urban areas where bicycles are used.
