Some people like to garden, some people might also like a beer garden, but now comes a new type of garden – a Wavegarden. This allows for home-grown waves for surfing right in the backyard. This could be a godsend to those who want to hit the surf but live far from the beach.
Basically Spanish engineering firm Instant Sport has created a prototype in Northern Spain that produces consistently rideable waves of all shapes and sizes – just like the ocean. These can be dialed up or down to suit a range of riders.
Of course there is a catch. To work with the Wavegarden artificial wave machine the body of water needs to be more than 650 x 160 feet at minimum, while an 820 x 262 feet area is recommended. Anything larger would work too. And this can’t be used on natural water as it needs a constant water level and needs to be drained for maintenance once a year.
And building the Wavegarden will cost you too, ranging from $3.8 million for a basic set up to $7.6 million for sites with terrain challenges. So for now it is probably something resorts and rich surfer dudes can afford… but we can dream!
