Giro Introduces New Aero Helmet Design

Aerodynamic helmet design has reached a new standard with Giro’s introduction of the Air Attack. Unlike anything resembling current TT designs, Giro’s new lid has a mostly solid outer shell with only six vents. Yet despite its oven-like appearance, the Air Attack makes good use of its internal channel design while the rider is moving. That said, some have questioned its ability to vent well in slow, high-intensity efforts such as prolonged climbs. Conversely, Giro claims that the Air Attack’s smooth shell is key to its slippery profile.

While Giro PR man Mark Riedy readily admits its looks are unusual, he firmly believes that function will ultimately trump form. The latest trends in road cycling seem to bear this out – aero framesets and wheels are all the rage today. In its most aerodynamic configuration, the Air Attack Shield includes an integrated eye shield that attaches with magnets and can be flipped out of view in case of rain.

The Air Attack will be offered in six colors and the Air Attack Shield in four, both with three size options each. Suggested retail prices are $200 and $240 respectively. It is rumored to weigh 264g with the shield adding 32g. Look for it at your favorite retailer in Spring 2013.
