2011 unfortunately looks like a replay of 2008 when gasoline prices hit an all time high in the United States. The cost to fill up the tank in the car resulted in many people looking to alternative options to get to work, to the store and just about everywhere else.
The bicycle manufacturers also listened and took note, and ironically are ready this time with a whole new segment of urban bicycles that are ready to get riders from point A to point B and just about anywhere else. Fortunately, too many cities are working to become more bicycle friendly.
This past month saw the Los Angeles City Council approve a new bicycle plan that would bring up to 40 miles of new lanes to the city each year, up four times from previous efforts. Nearby Long Beach has added bike lanes to its downtown, while the Windy City is installing a so-called Cycle Track in parts of Chicago, which would provide separated bike lanes. All these efforts could help lessen fuel demand – and in turn even help drive down prices.
We’ll be sure to watch for the latest trends in urban cycles. In the mean time, check out Mother Nature Network’s recap of “12 cool urban bicycles ready to replace your car.”
