In just 24-hours a new bike was created with the input of people on the internet. The “Quirky Moneyball Project” was a collaboration between crowd source invention company Quirky and Columbia Pictures in promotion of the new film Moneyball.
You might think that the promotion would be to build a better bat or baseball cleats. The challenge for Quirky however, was to develop and build a new bicycle in just 24 hours. The collaboration included input from the Quirky design team with the healp of Oakland A’s fans, film enthusiasts and the Quirky global community.

The outcome is Modus, a modular bike with an open frame that is highly adjustable and customizable. The main element of the bike is that the frame is an open “U” turned on its side with just one tube bending to that shape. The tube begins at the seat, extends to support the handlebars, drops to the fork and front wheel and doubles back to the rear tire. Inside the frame, accessories can be snapped in for easier transport. Accessories include a bike lock, briefcase, battery (though there is no mention of this being an electric bike at this point), or a briefcase. We can see the possibility of future accessories such as a rear basket or tool kit.
The Modus has a multi-grip position handlebar that adjusts to different type of riding such as commuting, errands and fitness. The bike uses a belt drive system that’s easy to maintain. The aero-streamlined saddle has an integrated handle in the rear. This doesn’t affect how you ride, but it’s a natural place to grab the bike.
Quirky is the force behind innovative products such as Switch, a customizable pocket knife; Core, a yoga accessory that bundles a strap, water bottle and phone holder in a way that lets you roll up your yoga mat with ease; and the Snow Shredder, a ski-driven sled that lets the riders steer and sit in comfort.
