It’s hard to let go of that loved cycling jersey, or the shorts with the perfect padding. If you recycle the garments, they really are going to a better place … back on the trails. Women’s mountain biking label Loeka Clothing just started a clothing recycling program that gives incentive to those who turn in their gear for recycling.
Loeka started manufacturing women’s mountain biking apparel in 2005; just enough time that the clothes might be showing just a little wear, or you might want to switch it up for a new design. Fill out a form on Loeka’s website and either mail in your gear or take it to a participating retailer. Retailers currently include Ruckus Skis, Boards and Bikes in Prince George BC; Ski Dazzle at Silverstar Resort; Mt Washington Alpine Resort, Mt Washington BC; Pedal Chic Greenville, South Carolina; and Iride Vermont, Stowe, Vermont.
Loeka will accept clothes in just about any condition, just as long as it has their label. Clothing in wearable condition are to be donated to the Salvation Army. Items in unwearable condition will be recycled into Loeka signage, banners and merchandising.
Customers who return their garments will receive vouchers valued between $5 and $10, depending on what’s returned. A jersey, pair of shorts, jacket, pants or hoodie will get a $10 voucher. Socks, belts, beanies and hats get the wearer a $5 voucher. Customers can redeem vouchers online or through participating retailers, however vouchers cannot be stacked. One voucher per garment purchase.
Loeka business owner Rory Harmse sees this move as “The first step in our long-term plans of establishing a fully sustainable business. Our customers love the outdoors, so we want to do our part to make sure we’re taking care of it for them and the future.”
While the current list of participating stores is limited, Loeka is working with dealers and distributors to expand the program. Details on how to recycle your garmets can be found here.
