Keeping Man’s Best Friend Fit

Earlier today we mentioned the Polar Bottle pet photo promotion and figured it would be the perfect time to mention another product – the Bike-a-Buddy. The Boulder, Colorado based company, afitdog, has a very simple to use and simple to install product that allows a dog owner to safely bike with their dog.

The Bike-a-Buddy attaches to your bike using basic tools that you probably have in your garage. A standard 7/16-inch wrench, flat head screwdriver and your Bike-a-Buddy is all that is required for installation. Barring any unforeseen issues, Bike-a-Buddy can be installed in about 15 minutes – just enough time for your pup to tear through a pair of your slippers.

Once the Bike-a-Buddy is installed, it becomes more obvious where this product shines. The metal framework and springs used in the leashes safely keep one or two dogs out of the working mechanisms of your bike and away from your feet. Along with keeping you dogs safe, the Bike-a-Buddy keeps you safe, especially if you have a dog that likes to pull. The framework mounts low on the bike, minimizing the chances of you being pulled down by lowing the center of mass. Coupled with the spring attachment on the leash, designed to absorbed the ‘pull’ from your dog, the Bike-a-Buddy should allow you to maintain control even if your dog tries to pull ahead.

It should be noted that the Bike-a-Buddy does not accommodate every size of dog, and very small dogs may have a difficult time keeping pace with you on your bike – even if you are riding very slowly. It is also important to check that your dog’s foot pads are in good condition. If they are not used to spending time with you running on the pavement, it is probably best to start them off with shorter bike rides to build up their pads.

The Bike-a-Buddy retails for $69.99 for the single dog model and $79.99 for the two dog model. If you purchase the single dog model and your canine family grows, you can purchase a second spring leash attachment for $15. The company acknowledges that it is possible that the Bike-a-Buddy will just not work with some dogs, so they off a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Orders can be made directly on afitdog’s website.

For you cat owners out there, unfortunately there has been no release date announced for Drag-a-Kitty – ok, don’t call PETA, that was a cat joke, made by a cat owner who has seen what happens when you put a leash on a cat… their legs just disappear.
