The Gates Carbon Drive system debuted back in 2008 based on 25 years motorcycle and dragster CDS technology. The Gates Carbon Drive System was developed to offer cyclists a lighter weight, lower maintenance, quieter ride and cleaner drive system than the current chain system on the market. The no-stretch Carbon Drive belt is embedded with carbon fiber cords and requires no lubrication, but the system does require a frame designed around the CDS.
The main obstacle to the Carbon Drive System is that the belt can not be ‘broken’ like a chain for installation and it requires a bicycle frame that is specifically designed or modified to allow the belt to be installed. If you are in the market for a new frame, this will not be a problem for you as there are manufacturers making frames from titanium, steel, aluminum, carbon fiber and even bamboo specifically designed around the Gates CDS. In 2011 it is expected that over 90 models of bicycles will be on the market equipped with the Carbon Drive System. The list of manufacturers supporting this system include Trek, Specialized, Spot Brand, Seven Cycles, Raleigh, Santos, Independent Fabrications and even tandem builder, Co-Motion. For those of you who do not want to give up your current ride, but still want to move to a belt drive system, you may still not be left in the dark. There are a host of frame builders that can modify your frame, but it is best to consult with the manufacturer of your frame first to discuss any possible issues.
New for 2011, Gates has developed a stronger belt which has also evolved into the Center Track. the Center Track belt now has a groove in each tooth which aligns to a mating center ridge in the chainring and cog. This improvement will aid in keeping the belt on the chainring and cog even if the one is slightly out of alignment. Gates has also developed the CDC product line specifically for the commuter and pavement specific bikes. This line will be offered at a lower price point than the CDX line to increase the availability to more cyclists.
If you are ready to make the shift to this system, you will not be alone. The Gates CDS is being used by commuters, couriers, endurance mountain bike racers, cyclocross racers and has even been ridden around the world by James Bowthorpe. As is true with all belts, keep in mind to never bend or kink the belt. If there are any kinks in the belt, the integrity of the belt has been compromised and should be replaced. This is not exclusive to the Gates CDS, but all belts.
