Whether you’re working out; hiking or seeking geocached treasures, you may be bringing three or more devices on your jaunt. A phone to stay connected and be able to call for help if necessary; a GPS device to guide you on your walks or track progress for workouts; and possibly an MP3 player to keep you entertained on the long run.
Verizon added three services from GPS-enabled outdoors activity provider Trimble: AllSport GPS; Trimble Outdoors; and Geocache Navigator through its V Cast subscription service. AllSport is an app that tracks workouts such as walks, runs and bike rides with maps. The app records more than 20 stats including distance, time, speed, and calories burned. The program lets you track goals as you progress through the season.Trimble Outdoors is more geared toward hiking, off-road and outdoor adventures. Download maps and navigate trails with Trimble Outdoors. On the trail you can collect points of interest, photos and audio clips to share with friends and family. The Geocache Navigator has some of the same “share with friends” functionality, but this is more of a treasure map. Use this app to get access to more than a million geocaches hidden around the world. Navigate to treasures, clues, and then share your spoils with friends by posting about it online. The three Trimble apps are available on certain Blackberry phones for a one-time fee of $9.99 each. Trimble Outdoors and AllSport GPS are also available on Android phones for the same price.
The ability to access all the data you need for your workouts, keep safe, and maybe listen to a little music as you work out all on one device is certainly convenient. It makes sense not to have to carry and fumble with multiple devices. However do keep in mind the battery life you’ll use during your run or hike. If you’re accessing the app and listening to music, you want to be sure you have enough juice to make a call.
