CES 2011: Bluetooth SIG Looks at Digital Healthcare

While we’ve been seeing press releases for all sorts of new (and supposedly innovative) products that will utilize wireless technology, including Bluetooth, most leave us scratching our heads. Does the world really need a Bluetooth Cooking Thermometer? Probably not, but we do think that Bluetooth has many health and fitness benefits.

We hope to hear more from next week’s Consumer Electronics Show, and Michael Foley, Ph.D., executive director of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), will expand on this topic during a panel discussion at the second annual Digital Health Summit at CES 2011. The panel, The Role of Remote Monitoring in Digital Healthcare Systems, will explore the importance of mobile health devices in the healthcare industry and will also highlight other available communication technologies that are allowing users to take control of their personal health in their everyday lives.

“Wireless technology is a key component for easily monitoring health and fitness conditions as it enables instant data transfer, allowing patients to view critical information in real time,” said Foley. “Bluetooth wireless technology has been around for over 10 years and has continued to innovate with new use cases and applications and we are thrilled to now be bringing this expertise to the mobile health space. We look forward to sharing our ideas and our knowledge at this year’s Digital Health Summit at CES 2011.”

Check back all next week for the latest on Bluetooth and other fitness technology from the Consumer Electronics Show.
