We’ve seen a variety of helmet mounted lights, but now the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology’s Exertion Games Lab has taken helmet lights to the next level with the LumanHelm. The design team, which included Wouter Walmink, Alan Chatham and Floyd Mueller took a regular bicycle helmet and added some LEDs – but not just one or two.
The team covered the helmet in an array of 104 multicolored programmable LEDs, and then covered the entire outer shell with a vacuum-formed translucent shell. The LumaHelemt can thus really light up to let drivers see the wearer at night. The helmet can be programmed using an open-source programming language to create a variety of lighting pattern.
