Domino Flip

SpydercoThe Spyderco Domino is the latest in the company’s line of flipper knives. Designed by Eric Glesser, this performance-driven knife offers a minimalist profile with refined ergonomics. Its trademarked Round Hole is positioned to offer optimal leverage and is supported by special ball-bearing washers in the pivot that reduce friction. This provides a smooth, reliable opening; and in the open position the flipper practically disappears into the grip-friendly contours of the handle.

Made of precision machined CTS- XHP stainless steel the Domino’s blade features a full-flat grind for superior edge geometry and a distal taper with an acute point. It is mated to a handle that consists of a solid titanium scale on one side and a titanium liner and carbon fiber/G-10 laminate scale on the other, where the solid titanium scale forms the foundation of the Domino’s sturdy Reeve Integral Lock (R.I.L). This is knife that is worth flipping for.

Rebel Yell

Repair-RebelKickstarter is full of multi-tool projects, and some will take off and some will just remain concepts. We have a good feeling about the Repair Rebel, a titanium multi-tool that can attach under a bike seat. It offers 24 various tools, include a dozen or so hex heads, a T25 tork head, Phillips screw driver and even some spoke keys. It is larger than some of the ultra compact tools we’ve seen, but this provides all the tools in a single piece so that there is nothing to lose and no moving parts.

The disc style design also provides more grip than those too-compact tools. This Repair Rebel could just about start a revolution. Video after the jump

Charge Ahead With 3D Printing

Charge-BikesWe’ve seen some big things with 3D printing, and surprisingly it has come not in composite materials or even plastics and resins, but in titanium. This shouldn’t be that surprising as titanium is actually refined from tiny grains rather than huge chunks.

However it works, Charge Bikes has now started testing 3D printed titanium sections of its frames. The company has reportedly collaborated with the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS). Working at the Innovation Works, the corporate research center for EADS group, Charge is charging forward to produce the world’s first 3D printed titanium frame utilizing manufacturing components designed for the aerospace industry.

While the full Charge Bikes Freezer cyclocross bike wasn’t actually printed out in 3D, the bike is the first to have any part produced this way. Video after the jump

In Tune

Tune-CupsWe’ve known those fans of titanium bicycles who take the love of the metal very seriously. Many companies have introduced consumer products out of the material as well, and Ti-lovers just can’t get enough. But now Tune is in tune with those who have a love of carbon fiber.

The company has introduced a line of Carbon Coffee Cups. At $240 a piece these are rather pricey, but given that carbon fiber will go the distance – and pretty much never wear out – these might be the last coffee cubs you ever have to buy. Apparently finding these might be the trick, as we’ve been searching high and low.

Drive Time

Polara Golf has introduced a driver aimed at those “golfers who want to achieve maximum distance,” which would assume would be everyone. The new Advantage Driver features an ultra-thin Beta-Titanium Face that promises to lighter, stronger and more resilient than standard titanium drivers. This can create a “trampoline effect” that can make shots go the distance.

Since this driver goes beyond the performance limits set forth by the USGA we don’t expect to see the pros using them, but for everyone else this could be one to help on the fairway.

Made in America: Merlin to do Cycle Magic Again

Last month Competitive Cyclist, an online specialty bicycle retailer, announced that it is reviving the Merlin brand. The titanium bicycle maker, which had been one of the dominant brands making titanium bikes in the 1990s, was purchased by Competitive Cyclists in 2011.

Launched in 1986 as Merlin Metalworks, the company was one of the first to release a titanium mountain bike frame, and in 1988 debuted its first road bike. Competitive Cyclist was proud to announce that Merlin bikes have upheld the tradition and are still 100 percent made in the USA.

Smart Throw

We knew we’d hear good things about Bush Smarts, and one product that caught our eye was the Bear Star, a titanium line thrower that includes 50 feet of highly-visible cable. It features a simple design but one that should make throwing a line a little easier. This can allow picnic baskets and other things that you want to keep away from pesky bears tied up where they can get to it. Smart idea, so once again Bush Smarts lives up to its name!

Spinning Reel Going Round

Cast off with the ForTiTude Fishing titanium spinning reel and you can forget about rusting or pitting, even in salt water. This reel features a solid titanium exterior along with solid titanium parts, making it 30 percent lighter than aluminum, which might not sound like much but after a long day of casting perhaps you’ll see it is worth the extra cost. But this reel should be durable for endless years of fishing as well, and there is even a lifetime warrant with free replacement of all parts. So cast away!

Ti2 for Judgment Day

Earlier this week we noted that the Cell Machined Survival Baton would protect your important stuff while camping or hiking. If that aluminum survival baton wasn’t enough for you consider the Sentinel, another survival baton/rod. This one is made from grade 2 titanium and features loops that can be hooked to rings, clips, and lanyards. Currently the creators are looking to raise funds through a Kickstarter project, with plans to bring these out in a variety of sizes. As the Sentinel is titanium it is waterproof and corrosion resistant, and could be made in multiple sizes so these can hold cash, medicine or just about anything else you might need for judgment day! Magic Metal

From BikeRadar: What is titanium?
Titanium is a metal that has an atomic number of 22 and its chemical element symbol is Ti – which is fitting, as many people in the bike industry often refer to titanium as ‘ti’. This metal doesn’t weigh as much as gold, but like that precious metal it’s corrosion-resistant and can be lustrous in a refined state. And unlike gold or silver, titanium is as strong as steel when properly processed. Continue reading Weekend Reading List (10.13.2012): Magic of Ti, Green Sports, Final Film, Running Disasters

Lock of the TiGr

We first heard about the TiGr lock back in May of 2011, when it was still just a Kickstarter project. But now the TiGr is ready to roar and roll. This 23-inch titanium strap provides a secure lock around the rear wheel and a bike rack, or even street post. Unlike other materials titanium is both strong and flexible – the result is that it can be harder (more difficult) to cut through than steel chains or even a U-Lock. Video after the jump

Interbike 2012: Day Three – More Road Bikes and Fixies

The long and winding road can often seem less long and a whole lot more fun with the right road bike. Today is the third and final day on the show floor and we continued to take in the sights of the road bikes, including Litespeed’s new C1 (above). Guru Goes Cannondale

Canadian custom bike maker Guru Bikes, which is known for its innovative DFU (Dynamic Fit Unit) for creating the perfect fit for riders looking to purchase a custom titanium or carbon fiber bike, could soon be part of the Cannondale family.

Does this mean that Cannondale will offer custom bicycles or just utilize the DFU system at some dealers? We’ll have to watch this one.
