Biodegrading in Memphis

Zeal-MemphisWhile you can be walking in Memphis, you can know that the new Zeal Optics’ Memphis sunglasses won’t last forever. These are part of the company’s Crafted series of biodegradable sunglasses, and are made of acetate based on Italian-grown cotton.

“Taking its hints from the retro classics, Memphis stands as a piece that transitions from suit and tie to an afternoon on the boat and is wearable by all,” said Zeal director of marketing Joe Prebich. “Subtle eye shape with a flat bridge on the brow of the glass allows for a closer, more comfortable fit. Lightweight sculpted temples help to increase comfort as well, for a long-term wearable sunglass.”

The Crafted Collection includes the Memphis, Ace, Fleetwood and Dakota models, and all are biodegradable, designed in Colorado and made in Italy.

Recycled Skate Decks

We’ve seen companies such as MapleXo turn used skateboards into sunglasses and iPhone cases, but apparently other companies are looking to ensure that old skate decks don’t end up in landfills. Streetwear maker Diamond Supply Co. is launching its own mini-accessory line that includes an iPhone 5 case and companion sunglass frame.

These products are made from 100 percent recycled skateboard wood, and feature the words “BRILLIANTLY CRAFTED” etched onto the frames. Brilliant and sustainable.

Sunglasses From Skateboards

Last year we reported on MapleXo, an Oregon-based company that was turning broken skateboard decks into iPhone cases. Now we caught this cool video that shows how some crafty individuals are using old decks and recycling them into sunglasses.

This is possible because most skate decks are still good old fashioned wood. Makes us want to think twice about those carbon fiber bike frames, tennis rackets and even hockey sticks, as well as other items that still can’t be so easily recycled.
