Tubbs Hits the Snow

Tubbs-SnowshoesWinter appears to be resilient this year, and if you’re itching to get out you might need to do some hiking in the snow. Fortunately Tubbs Snowshoes has you covered. This winter the company introduced the FLEX VRT and FLEX RDG snowshoes.

The FLEX VRT (Vertical) offer a new DynamicFit Binding with a Boa Closure system, that evenly distributes tension around a user’s boot for ultimate precision; while the FLEX Tail design puts less stress on the joints.

The FLEX RDG (Ridge) is engineered to give footing for all-mountain terrain, and these offer the company’s new CustomWrap binding with Boa Closure System, which also incorporates the heel-strap into the binding’s construction, creating exceptional precision with the simple twist of a dial.

Minimal Snowshoes

Snowshoes can make it easy to walk in deep snow, but can also be stiff and uncomfortable. French snowshoe maker TSL Outdoor is looking to find a solution that provides the stability of snowshoes with some flexibility. The result is the Symbioz, which are slimmer and more flexible. These feature a series of spikes on the underside of the shoes to provide extra points of contact on uneven terrain, while the sidehill grip further bends with the contours of the terrain.

The idea is that these shoes provide a “symbiosis with nature,” providing a “barefoot” snowshoe. While we wouldn’t recommend actually going barefoot in the snow, we can see that TSL might be on to becoming one with the snow through the Symboiz.

Outdoor Retail Show Preview: Abominable Snowshoes

Like Bigfoot the Yeti, also known as the Abominable Snowman, remains something illusive. More a myth than reality, but Louis Garneau has could allow winter trekkers to tackle the snow like a Yeti.

The company has introduced the Boa Closure System to its line of high-performance Yeti snowshoes in advance of next month’s Outdoor Demo and Outdoor Retail Show. Designed for the back country these lightweight snowshoes utilize the Contact Pro Harness System for on-the-fly adjustment and a secure fit. It might be just the thing for those who hike in search of mythical snowmen.

Blow up Snow Shoes

Earlier this week we reported on the Bike Pants from Bulgarian based Any Exit. Apparently the former Communist Bloc country has taken its 20+ years of freedom very seriously as it has developed some impressively innovative ideas. In addition to pants with removable pockets designed for cyclists, the company has created the inflatable Small Foot snowshoes, which are designed for use in emergencies.

These have the appearance of life rafts on the foot when inflated, but can packed down quite small, so could be good for anyone who goes hiking and worries about snowing coming in. The creator reportedly came up with the designs while lost in the mountains in knee-deep snow. Let’s just hope he wasn’t wearing the Small Foot Bike Pants and had something more appropriate for the wilds. Video after the jump

Made in America: Redfeather Snowshoes

Redfeather Snowshoes - Vapor

This week’s Made in America post appears on a day when the Colorado Front Range is finally getting pounded with its first winter storm of 2012. If the weather forecasters are correct, we may see up to 18-inches of snow by the time the storm is done. What better day to feature a company that has its roots in Colorado and may actually help me get out and around. Redfeather Snowshoes was founded back in 1988 by another Colorado resident who too was snow-bound, but that individual was a triathlete who lived up in Leadville, Colorado at 10,000-feet. His original design utilized an aluminum frame with a ‘V’ shaped tail that reduced the chance of a tail from one shoe from hitting the other shoe, especially while running and overall improved maneuverability while snowshoeing. This simple change to the shape has lead to the modern sport of snowshoeing that we know today as noted by Jim Tucker on the United States Snowshoe Association (USSSA) website. Made in America: MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoes

Snowshoeing is an activity that most able bodied people can do during the winter, just as long as there is enough snow. This is proving to be a fairly light snow year, at least in Colorado, but hopefully as we get into the later winter months that will change. There are quite a few companies that still manufacture their snowshoes in America, and one recently caught our eye due to its unique features. The MSR Lightning Ascent, by Cascade Designs, looks like a traditional snowshoe from a far, but has a whole list of features that set these shoes one step ahead of the competition. Made in America: Iverson Snowshoes

With so many products now made of carbon fiber and plastics there is the concern on how these materials will eventually be recycled. Products should be made to last, but that doesn’t have to be last forever in a landfill. Fortunately, there are still items that are made to last from natural materials. These items allow you to think about which grandchild might be inheriting them instead of how will they be disposed. The people at Iverson Shoenows believe in making a product that will last – not one season or even a few seasons, but a lifetime. Since 1954, Iverson has been crafting some of the finest quality snowshoes and they are still making them in America.

Based in Shingleton, Michigan for over 50 years, Iverson has been making their snowshoes from premium Michigan White Ash, full grain rawhides and pure copper hardware. The consumer side of the business was started by Clarence Iverson after word got out about his design and construction of snowshoes for the State of Michigan. His design solution was simple – create a snowshoe to walk on top of the snow instead of through it, there by reducing the energy expended and provide maximum weight distribution for optimum flotation. All while making a product that would withstand the brutal backcountry of the Upper Peninsula. Continue reading Made in America: Iverson Snowshoes

SIA Preview: MTN Approach – Backcountry Riders Rejoice!

‘Fresh tracks’… the endless pursuit of most boarders to be the first to descend a mountain full of freshly fallen snow. At most resorts it is tough to be to first on the slopes so this drives the truly hardcore into the backcountry. These people hike up slopes for hours in waist-deep snow just to get one or two runs a day in the virgin snow – a ‘high‘ that is tough to duplicate.

The pursuit of freshies just got a little easier! MTN Approach has announced the first three-part, light weight, folding approach ski. Designed by snowboarders and weighing just 3.5 pounds per foot, each ski has two hinges that allows this 150cm ski to fold down to 53cm (approximately 21”). This might not sound like a big deal, but as someone who has snowshoed all-day to ride on some fresh powder, the use of skis make the ascent much quicker and easier as they do not sink into the snow as deep. Sure, snowshoes work fine to hike up a slope, but they often do not fit snowboard boots very well. This means that more equipment is required to be carried if a second set of boots is needed.

The MTN Approach skis do not utilize traditional ski bindings requiring specific, ridged boots. The MTN Approach skis has bindings that a straps similar to snowboards which allows the use of just about any snowboard boot. These skis also feature metal edges, side cuts and full camber. This permits the rider to perform a more confident ascent of the mountain, especially when traversing a slope. Continue reading SIA Preview: MTN Approach – Backcountry Riders Rejoice!
