For Breast Cancer Awareness Month Vonzipper rolled out its new Beefy Astro Chrome and Chakra Bonze Pink Chrome snow goggles to benefit B4BC (Boarding For Breast Cancer). The goal of the group is to increase awareness about breast cancer, highlight the importance of early detection and the value of an active lifestyle. A portion of the sales of the goggles – which each retail $90 – go to B4BC. Get them before it is too late.

Adidas Gets Board
Sporting footwear maker Adidas has long been known to take chances and try new things. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise when the company announced last Friday that it had reached a deal to sign several professional snowboarders to its new team.
Joining Jake Blauvelt, who signed earlier in the year, and with a soon to be released signature après shred boot launching this month, the following professional snowboarders join the Adidas team: Kazu Kokubo, Eric Jackson, Helen Schettini, Forest Bailey and Keegan Valaika. The company further noted that the Adidas snowboarding joins Adidas Skateboarding in an effort towards dedication to authentic and collaborative footwear and apparel designed by skateboarders and snowboarders, for skateboarders and snowboarders.
Snowsports Participation Report Numbers
Just because winter is a time to bundle up with extra layers, doesn’t mean all of us are hibernating. Many of us get out and burn calories on the slopes, ice and take part in other outdoor adventures. SIA, the SnowSports Industries America organization, released its 2012 SIA Snow Sports Participation Report. ICEdot to Provide Emergency Response System for Athletes
A helmet can help protect the wearer’s head in case of a fall or accident, but it can’t call for help. What is an individual to do if he or she falls while out alone and far from home? ICEdot (In Case of Emergency) is working to provide a solution, and the company has partnered with SenseTech LLC of Denver to develop and launch a helmet-mounted impact sensor.
In the event of an accident the sensor determines the crucial forces, and can activate communications on the wearer’s smartphone to send a request for help. Beverly Hills Studio Offers Simulated Ski Sessions
This winter’s mild weather has made for a slow ski season in many parts of the United States, but fortunately there’s a new destination winter sports aficionados can head to — Beverly Hills, CA. That’s right, the sun-drenched city know for its million-dollar celebrity mansions and fad diets is now home to SkyTechSport Ski and Fit, an indoor studio for ski and snowboard fans.
The club currently offers two ski simulators: the President Lux, an 18-foot-long ski simulator that’s paired with a 10-foot screen, and the larger Olymp simulator (pictured above), a 24-foot-long machine that’s paired with a panoramic display and 3D capability. SIA 2012: Quicksilver Makes a Play for the Mountains
Quicksilver, a brand known among surfers, watermen, skateboarders and snowboarders, is prepping its fall 2012 line for a newly launched mountain division. The line will be on show at Outdoor Retailer and SIA this month.
The fall line includes 16 pieces including insulator jackets, down parkas, fleeces, bombers, windbreakers and shells that range in price fom $80 to $250. In an early look Quicksilver revealed a photo of its Ghost Tree jacket, shown in orange.
Eye of the Dragon
When snowboarding you need not have the eyes of a tiger or an eagle, you need the eyes of the Dragon, and the Dragon Hero APX goggles will let you see the way. These feature super anti-fog, infinity lens technology, with armored venting and unidirectional air flow. Additionally they are helmet compatible and offer polar tech micro fleece lining for those who fly down the hills like… yes, a dragon!
Recon Heads-Up Display Tech to be Adapted for Space Exploration
Typically NASA’s research and technologies lead to the creation of consumer and commercial products. But it looks like NASA will be utilizing a commercial product as part of its next-generation spacesuits and helmets, according to a report from Wired.
NASA announced that Recon Instruments will be creating a customized integrated heads-up display for helmets that’s based on Recon’s GPS-enabled, heads-up-display-equipped goggles for snowboarders. The technology will be integrated into NASA’s Desert RATS initiative for future missions to Mars and other galactic destinations.
Nokia Pushes Ahead with Burton
How was the run you might be asked at the bottom of the slope? Now you can tell how it was, while using your Nokia N8 to offer the details. Last week Nokia and Burton Snowboards announced a new partnership that will create a new way to visualize snowboarding with the Nokia x Burton: Push Snowboarding.
With sensors on the rider and snowboarder to detect a snowboard’s orientation, downward pressure exerted by the rider, as well as heart rate and Galvanic skin response – factors used in lie detector technology – riders can get post run data, which is sent to a Nokia N8 mobile phone. While GPS technology can further clock a rider’s speed down the Galvanic skin response actually monitors biofeedback that can detect elevated emotions, such as fearing for one’s life. So anyone who says, “It was nothing” will have to mean it. Let’s see if this technology pushes riders to new extremes.

In case you didn’t get the memo – we obviously were late to the game – this week is National Safety Awareness Week (January 15 – 23) on the ski slopes around the country. This includes knowing and following the code:
Skiing and snowboarding can be enjoyed in many ways. At ski areas you may see people using alpine, snowboard, telemark, cross country and other specialized ski equipment, such as that used by disabled or other skiers. Regardless of how you decide to enjoy the slopes, always show courtesy to others and be aware that there are elements of risk in skiing that common sense and personal awareness can help reduce. Observe the code listed below and share with other skiers the responsibility for a great skiing experience.
- Always stay in control.
- People ahead of you have the right of way.
- Stop in a safe place for you and others.
- Whenever starting downhill or merging, look uphill and yield.
- Use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.
- Observe signs and warnings, and keep off closed trails.
- Know how to use the lifts safely.

SNOWBoarding Comes to the Pad With HD Photos
The board is on the pad, or more accurately TransWorld SNOWboarding magazine is now available in app form for the iPad. The current iPad version features the Photo Annual, the yearly issue that wraps up the year in snowboarding. Photo Annual comes jam packed with the best action photos of the year in unreal clarity, depth and more full-screen images than any other issue!
From the iPad readers can practically take to the slopes and enjoy hi-def photography, as the Photo Annual showcases an impressive look back at the sport in 2010.
