Snow (Wrist) Guard

Wrist guards have long been recommended for use with roller blades, but these can be useful in any sport where you can fall at high speeds. The catch is making sure that the wrist guards don’t interfere with the natural motion or restrict mobility. Hence, wrist guards aren’t really useful in cycling there these could impact ability to steer and maintain balance.

Likewise in skiing the wrist guards could be a problem as it could make using the poles difficult, but in snowboarding where arm movement is really just needed for balance protection can be utilized. And as snowboarders often hit the slopes at high speeds, which can mean high speed crashes and wrist injury. Continue reading Snow (Wrist) Guard

Adaptive Snowboard For Paralyzed Rider

httpv://youtu.be/brEmdlEwf4M

The guys at Signal Snowboards use “Every Third Thursday” to come up with something innovative in their snowboard creations. But last month they did that was both innovative and inspirational. They created a very special board for their friend and former pro snowboarder Tim Ostler, who was paralyzed from the chest down following a halfpipe accident. Using Crankbrothers Mountain bike component technology they created an adaptive snowboard so Ostler could shred up on the trails.

OK, we missed this one when the guys at Every Third Thursday – who always create something truly unique – first offered up an Xylophone Snowboard (Video above), but we felt it interesting enough to post about it now. We’re not sure how it will ride on the snow, but it can certainly carry a tune!

Poler Takes You Back to Nature

While some camping gear has gone so high-tech that it might not feel like you’re actually getting back to nature, Portland’s Poler Camping Stuff brand, which launched last fall, is all about simple yet efficient. The company’s focus revolves around being “an outdoor brand that brings together surf/skate/snowboard culture and sensibilities into pragmatic gear,” and providing “simple, good looking, well designed gear.” The products offer a vintage look, such as the Napsack sleeping bag that will keep you warm at night and in the morning let you wear it while heading to the camp fire.

Jonesin’ to Board

While many sports have seen the development of women-specific products this hasn’t always been the case, but now those ladies looking to hit the powder can do it on a board made just for them. Jones Snowboards, the brand behind professional big mountain boarder Jeremy Jones, has introduced a line of women’s snowboards for the 2012-2013 season. The line focuses on big mountain freeriding, powder and all-mountain versatility via three distinct boards, including a splitboard model. Continue reading Jonesin’ to Board

Split Board Designed to Survive in the Wilds

Those crazy guys at Every Third Thursday often create snowboards and surfboards that are solutions without a problem – and we do mean that in the nicest way. So it was no surprise to hear that they created the latest creation is such a board.

Introducing the Signal Snowboard Survivor Split, a one-of-a-kind board, that could be a dream for the snowboarding mountain man. It can cut wood, start a fire or even be used as a shovel. As the name suggests this board can split into skis to allow backcountry boarders to ski up the mountain and then down again – that in itself is pretty ingenious. Video after the jump

Ski Retriever Helps Find Lost Skis

While probably not much of a problem this season, in years with deep snow or when regions get lots of natural snow, some skiers might find themselves trying to find lost skis. This no doubt cuts down on the fun. It seems like a small problem, but enough that Ski Retriever has come to the rescue with a homing system.

This is simple enough, where a homing tag attaches to each ski (or snowboard) and a radio-based receiver unit picks up the signal. LED and audio prompts will let a user know when they’re getting close – sort of a treasure hunt on the slopes. The system reportedly works up to 400 feet, while conditions including depth under the white stuff and weather can affect the distance.

The company has reported positive response since the product was introduced in January at the SIA Snow Show in Denver. This could be a case where a problem was solved that people didn’t they had – until they tried to dig out their skis!

Helmet Goggle Link

There seems to be a magnetic connection this winter season when it comes to ski helmets and goggles – at least as a means to keep the ear protection attached to the head protection. While Anon has introduced its Magne-Tech lens technology, Casco has now developed the Magne-Link system, which also replaces the traditional wraparound headband.

Instead the goggles feature straps that line up with the aid of magnets and snap into place for a perfect fit – almost as if there is some sort of “magnetic” attraction at work!

Every Third Thursday Creates Snow/Surfboard

Don’t tell the guys at Signal Snowboards/Every Third Thursday it can’t be done. They’re created snowboards with iPads and boomboxes built in, and now they’re done what a lot of people would likely say can’t be done – a snowboard that can double as a surfboard!

Now on the surface a board is a board, right? Well, yes and no. Both do ride on water – just one is wet and the other is frozen. And while surfing has existed as long as man has tried to float, snowboarding is actually a fairly new concept. But the latter does often look to the former.

So how’d it work? Better than expected as the video below shows! Video after the jump
