Olympic Tech Help

From The Guardian: London 2012 Olympics: How athletes use technology to win medals
Ever since the first ancient Greek chipped away at a lump of stone to give it the smooth, aerodynamic properties of a discus, sportsmen and engineers have been looking at ways to enhance performance – while some of those denied medals have been crying foul. Run Light as an Adizero Feather 2

Adidas has announced the launch of its Adizero Feather 2 shoe, which at 6.7 ounces is one of the lightest everyday running shoes yet. The shoes feature a SprintFrame to significantly reduce shoe weight while still maintaining comfort and returning energy in each stride, while TORSION technology allows full freedom of motion in the front and back of each shot. The Feather 2 also offers SprintWeb, a lightweight mesh construction that provides support as well as breathability. The adiPrene+ and adiWear rubber outsole will ensure durability and traction while running. Continue reading Run Light as an Adizero Feather 2

FiveFinger Shoes Gets Fashionable

While the barefoot running shoes that fit the wearer much like a glove have become increasingly popular most of these have the visual appeal of a pair of gloves for the feet. It is to the point that we’ve wondered why the companies don’t just give up and make these look like hairy Hobbit’s feet!

Apparently we weren’t the only ones to bemoan the bland colors and lack of style. Vibram FiveFingers announced this week that the Seeya LS will arrive this fall and promises the new shoes to be a “stylish streetwear cross trainer.” The shoes will add a splash of color, but beyond the style the shoes still will weigh in at just five ounces on each foot, and will feature a non-stretch polyester mesh upper and a 2mm EVA insole and grippy rubber on the outsole. Hands On: ThingSling

Last month at CTIA we got our hands on a ThingSling. More accurately, a ThingSling got stuck to our phone. This elastic strap fixes to the back of any phone with a 3M adhesive. And boy does that thing stick.

We wrote some first impressions of the strap, but now that it’s been a few weeks, I thought I’d go a little deeper on my thoughts. The strap has a rigid plastic frame that anchors the adhesive. It sticks to just about any phone or case, though John Murphy, the ThingSling creator, said it doesn’t stick to silicone used in many phone cases. While it’ll come off easily when I want it off, I haven’t had any trouble with the ThingSling trying to come off the Cygnett Frost Case on my phone. Continue reading Hands On: ThingSling

Burn More?

From Runner’s World: Running v. Walking: How Many Calories Will You Burn?
Two weeks ago, I began planning an update to a Walking v. Running calorie-burn article that I had written for Runner’s World magazine in 2005. When that article subsequently appeared on the RunnersWorld.com website, it attracted a lot of interest and comments. Some of those comments displayed the widespread confusion and outright disbelief that’s common to this topic. Orthaheel’s Vionic Line Aids Sport Recovery

You can spend all you want on your running shoes, but once you come back from a workout and slip on a pair of sandals or flip-flops, all that support goes away during crucial recovery time. Orthaheel is working on that issue with its Vionic line. These sandals and flip-flops offer support to prevent pronation. The five models are designed with a triple-density midsole; a high-traction Vibram outsole and a biomechanically contoured, motion controlled footbed. Speed Track Suit

The trend in track and field attire has been “less” as in less fabric over all. But now Nike is going another direction with skin tight suits that could give runners an edge. The Nike Pro TurboSpeed is a newly designed track uniform that offers aerodynamic techniques that have been used on golf balls – with the idea that it could shave millisecond off a sprinter’s time. And with races that close it can make the difference at the finish line.

The suit features dimples on the shoulders, arms and calves – parts of the body that create resistance when running – and these dimples or “surface architectures” as Nike calls them create a turbulent rather than laminar layer of air molecules. With golf balls this holds the surface more efficiently than it would with a smooth surface. Continue reading Speed Track Suit
