Maximum Air

Air-MaxNike is promising smooth running this summer with its Nike Flyknit Air Max running shoes, which offer a lighter waffle pattern outsole that has been redesigned to distribute the wearer’s weight more evenly. The shoes feature Flywire technology that integrates with the laces and provides a dynamic yet supportive fit.

The sculpted cushion midsole will put spring in the step, while the flex grooves provide for more natural range of motion. The crazy colors include reflective elements that should enhance visibility in low light.

Nike Looks Rather Fly(Knit) With Lightweight Shoe

Flyknit-Lunar2Lighter is better. At least that’s the thinking that Nike designers have when it comes to running shoes. But the Nike Flynit Lunar2 aren’t just light, these are also stronger than the average running shoes. These utilize the Lunarlon cushioning to provide a responsive, fluid platform that will have you feeling like you’re running on air, while the Flynit provides a light but very supportive upper. One the company calls a “magical combination.” Video after the jump

Kross’ing Guard

KROSS-M-WINTERIt is hard to get the barefoot running experience this time of the year. For one the temperatures are so cold you probably wouldn’t want to run barefoot and second running on snow and ice probably is never a good idea. The Kross M Winter shoe from Lizard Footwear lets runners get the feel of minimalist running in the winter.

This lightweight, flexible shoe still provides protection from the cold and features a Vibram IceTrek outsole to grip mud, rocks and wet terrain. The upper is made of Schoeller tight fabric or leather and ClimaSkin membrane that makes the shoe water resistant. The Primaloft padding also insulates the feet from cold, which is something we’ve had just about enough of this winter!

BUG-like Grip

ANIMA2-BUGripOne good thing about winter is that runners don’t have to deal with a lot of bugs, and while insects generally can’t get a grip on ice the ANIMA2 BUGrip shoes offer sure footing in most winter conditions. Made by Icebug of Gothenburg, Sweden these feature 19 sharp studs that are embedded into the shoe’s rubber sole.

These 1mm long studes can dig in to provide traction when there is snow and ice on the ground and provide decent traction. These aren’t fully waterproof but they provide enough water resistance to keep the feet dry in icy and snowy conditions. While not ideal for concrete or indoor use these will help runners get through the long winter ahead.

Smart Shoes Ready to Run

Smart-RunningThere are smartphones and smart watches, but now developers at the Institute for Photonic Microsystems (IPMS) are looking to create smarter shoes. The “EU Project RUNSAFER” concept utilizes specialized running shoe packed with a micro-controller, a radio frequency (RF) module, accelerometers, GPS sensors and a battery.

The system is designed to capture biomechanical signals from the body and transmits them via Bluetooth to the a runner’s smartphone, which then evaluates the data and offers feedback to the runner on how they can improve performance.

“Pulse-rate watches and chest straps record only vital signs like breathing and heart rat,” said Dr. Andreas Heinig, a scientist at IPMS. “In contrast, our running shoe medically evaluates and moni- tors training while jogging. It informs the runner for example of incorrect foot position, asym- metric loading, or warns of exhaustion or overload. There has never been a comparable device before.”

A prototype of the running shoe has already been developed, as has a mobile smartphone app. The researchers are now working on a smaller version of the microelectronics and sensors, which remains the bigger challenge, particularly since the system must be waterproof, light, and durable.

NewtonMinimalist running shoe maker Newton has proved that you can always add more without actually adding too much. This is true with the company’s line of 2014 running shoes. The company promises “more pop than ever,” and this includes the new +ONE lug platform, which adds a fifth lug to provide more cushioning, greater responsiveness and a broader, more stable base for the runner.

The company’s entire line of 2014 shoes will be ready to hit the road or trail in February.

Minimal Acceleration

Acceleritas3Swedish shoemaker Icebug is looking to give minimalist runners some serious traction for the trails. The company is in maximum gear with the Acceleritas3, a shoe that strips away everything except what is needed for stable footing in any terrain.

Designed to feel like a pair of socks, this natural shoe provides thermal and impact protection and yes a lot of traction. The outsole offers a special pattern that is optimized to grip on hard as well as wet surfaces. The shoes won’t absorb water and thus won’t get heavier even in wet and watery conditions. Instead they’ll feel light on the feet while offering serious grip in almost any terrain.

From the Ashes

Nike-Air-Pegasus-83-30We’re not saying this shoe burned up and rose from the ashes, but perhaps if you wear it you’ll be able to burn up the track – at least stylistically. The Nike Air Pegasus 83/30 offers a classic look and comes in a range of colors. There is even a reflective strip that provides visibility at night. The shoe offers a mesh upper that features stitch-less construction for a comfortable fit with excellent ventilation. It will look good and feel good – and isn’t that a way to rise above?
