Apple Hardware Maker Buys Stake in GoPro

The company that makes a number of products for other companies bought a stake in rugged camera maker GoPro. Foxconn is widely known for making Apple’s iPhone and iPad but also makes the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

This week GoPro announced that Foxconn purchased 8.88 % of the company for $200 million, which puts GoPro’s value at $2.25 billion. Not a bad deal for GoPro. And probably not a bad move either. GoPro reportedly couldn’t meet demand for the holidays, and Foxconn certainly knows how to deliver. While Foxconn came under scrutiny after a wave of employee suicide attempts the contract manufacturer has reportedly increased pay and improved worker conditions.

Still, let’s just hope GoPro cameras aren’t used to show any Foxconn employee suicides.

Foolish New Action Camera

With a name like Foolish you might wonder what UK-based Nilox are thinking, but apparently this could be a smart move as the company looks to introduce a durable action camera at an affordable price. It will be available for £199.95 ($320). For that price the Nilox Foolish will come with a two waterproof casings, an 8GB micro SD card, and various mounting fixings.

The Foolish will be able to record at full HD 1080p at 30fps, or at 720p at 60fps while also being able to capture still images at 8megapixels. This action camera also features a 4x digital zoom. Control of the camera is done through one button filming, with another for taking still shots. A laser pointer is included to provide the desired line of site as well, because the designers clearly wouldn’t want owners to actually do something foolish. Video after the jump

Photokina: Polaroid Gets in on the Action Sports

JVC and Sony have joined GoPro and the other action cameras and now so has Polaroid with a new line of sports video cameras that was introduced at the recent Photokina show in Germany. The Polaroid XS sports camera line features three models that include waterproof technology, low-light capabilities and are up to just about any outdoor adventure.

The XS100 (above) offers easy-to-use single button record, along with a professional 5MP sensor, and can record HD video in 720p, 960p and 1080p video along with 3MP, 5MP and 16MP still images. It features an aerodynamic design with a shock-proof exterior and distortion-free ultra wide lens to provide 170-degrees of coverage. Olympus TG-625 Goes Uber Tough

Olympus keeps coming back for more. The company has introduced a full line of rugged cameras this year, but for those that have been holding off you might be in luck. The Olympus Stylus TG-625 is the top of the line – it is waterproof, shockproof and freeze-proof. But this 12megapixel camera with back-illuminated CMOS Sensor is far looking too rugged.

It looks durable yet stylish at the same time. But more importantly it is loaded with features, including iHS Technology, to ensure the picture. It offers a fast start-up time so you won’t miss that perfect shot, while the 28mm wide-angle to 5x optical zoom will also put you right where you need to be. CamOne Action Cam

There are several unique takes on the action camcorder market, and CamOne could be a bit of a game changer. Like most rugged go anywhere video cameras, the CamOne Infinity can shoot in 1080p at 30 fps or 720p at 60 fps. It can be mounted on a helmet or handlebars, and it offers an LCD screen to view the action right after you shot it.

But what really makes this one stand out is the fact that it offers interchangeable lenses. The CamOne Infinity’s standard lens offers a 170-degee, wide-angle filming in WVGA, 720p and 960p as well as 127-degree filming in 1080p. Additional lenses are reportedly coming soon and will include 142-degree and 96-degree options. Continue reading CamOne Action Cam

Rugged is the name of the game this season with point-and-shoot digital cameras and Sony isn’t going to be left behind. It can get wet and wild and be submerged up to five meters in water and dropped from 1.5 meters, while also being dustproof and freeze proof. Continue reading Sony Gets Rugged

Olympus Delivers More Rugged Cameras

Last month we reported that Olympus had shown off its Tough TG-320 rugged camera. Designed for the budget conscience consumer this one still was loaded with some great features. But apparently Olympus wasn’t done, and the company has also introduced two other lines – the Tough TG-820 and Tough TG-620, which will hit stores in Japan beginning later this month.

Both series will feature iHS technology with 12megapixel backlit CMOS sensor, and advanced features including Magic Filters and Beauty mode/Beauty make. There is even a “Pet Mode” that automatically detects the face of a cat or dog and focuses before shooting the photo. Both the TG-820 and TG-620 lines can capture 3D photos, and feature 5x optical zoom, along with Full HD movie (1,920×1,080) video recording with encoding in MOV/H.264 format. Canon (Power)Shots Again

What camera company isn’t releasing a rugged digital camera? This week Canon announced its upcoming PowerShot D20, which is much more than just an update of the D10 – in fact in a way it is more because it is less. While the D10 was a large and bulky point and shoot, the D20 is a sleeker model, but still features a robust and sporty design.

The PowerShot D20 is made for those who are a little tough on their devices, and as such it is waterproof to 33-fteet and shock-proof to about five-feet, while also being freezeproof to about -10C. It is also sealed up tight to protect the internals electronics from sand and dust. Continue reading Canon (Power)Shots Again

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-TS4

Whether you’re on a budget or want to go all out and the sky is the limit, Panasonic has a camera for you. This week the company introduced two new rugged outdoor digital cameras.

CES 2012: Olympus Gets Tough Again

There was no shortage of rugged cameras at last week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. From Olympus it wasn’t just rugged, it was tough, as in the Tough TG-320, the latest in the company’s line of go anywhere cameras. This one is ideal for the budget conscious, as it will cost just $179.99 when it arrives later this year.

As with most rugged point-and-shoot digital cameras it is waterproof, shock-proof, freeze-proof dust-proof and still offers 14megapixel resolution. It will feature a 3.6x wide-angle optical zoom with a 3D photo mode, and HDMI port for easy connectivity to a TV. While it can’t go deep underwater, reportedly only to about 10 feet, it will still survive a little water, which can go a long way.

CES 2012: Fujifilm Get Rugged

FujiFilm XP50
FujiFilm XP50

This week at the Consumer Electronics Show Fujifilm is showing off 19 new digital cameras, and these include the ruggedized FinePix line, with the XP150, XP100 and XP50. The former two are waterproof down to 33 feet, shockproof to a 6.5 foot drop, freezeproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit, and of course dustproof, so these are pretty much ready for just about any excursion. The XP50 will be for the budget minded offering a little less protection but still rugged enough for most adventures. It is waterproof to 16.5 feet, shockproof from 5 feet, with the same freeze- and dustproofing.

Nikon Gets Rugged

Nikon has been known for making some excellent SLR digital cameras and head turning point-and-shoot cameras. But one area where the company has been lacking has been in the rugged point-and-shoot variety. Well, not anymore. This month will see the release of the AW100, Nikon’s first camera in the go anywhere, do anything category.

The AW100 is reportedly shockproof, waterproof to 33 feet and even freeze-proof, so it will work on the trails, at the beach and in the snow. It features a 15.1MP BSI CMOS sensor and has built-in GPS and internal mapping functions that will work much like a travelogue to view your way. It is available this month for $430 and ready for your next adventure.
