Swedish helmet and eyewear maker POC is all blue over Garmin. The company has signed on a sponsor for the Garmin-Sharp Pro Team for the next three years, and as such will supply helmets and eyewear to the team. Riders will reportedly be outfitted with Octal, Octal Aero and Tempor TT Helmets, and will be able to choose from a variety of POC’s different eyewear frames. This is a big move for the helmet maker, which first released a ski and snowboard helmet in 2005.

Volvo Partners With POC
Volvo Car Group announced this month that it had established a partnership with Swedish sports protective gear maker POC to develop ways to create communication between cars and cyclists.
“Communication with cyclists around the car is a possible extension of our groundbreaking Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection technology. Providing the cyclist with confirmation that he or she is seen by the vehicle can make interaction between cars and cyclists smoother and safer in urban areas,” said Jan Ivarsson, Senior Manager, Safety Strategy and Requirements at Volvo Cars.
Finding a way to help alert drivers and avoid accidents would come as good news to cyclists.

POC Opens the Lid
POC Sports will have you looking like the Poc-man this winter, as the company has introduced is new Lid super-wide vision frameless goggle for the slopes. These feature a double lens that is made of optical grade PC/CP and offers the best anti-fog and anti-scratch treatment out there. These goggles provide unobstructed view, which lets wearers react faster to hazards in the peripheral vision.
Interbike 2013: Head Above
POC has been a company that has turned heads with its unique head protection, and at last week’s Interbike trade show the company introduced its Octal helmet that weights just 200 grams while offering a precise fit. The helmet is designed to be minimal but still provides ample protection. It includes a shell that extends lower around the head and thus offers greater protection to the temples in a crash.
It is also available in red, which the company claims will stand out in traffic and help riders be visible on the road.
POC Goes to the Road
Last year POC made a big impact with its revolutionary award-winning ski and snowboard helmets and more recently with its mountain bike helmets. This year the company is looking to get on the road with new cycling helmets, apparel and eyewear lines. While snow sports sales now account for 80 percent of POC’s business the company is looking to divide its business between cycling and snow sports – likely to be more of a year round business.
POC will debut its new product lines at this year’s Eurobike and Interbike trade shows.
Poc Man
Music Powered POC Helmet
We’ve seen a number of snowboard helmets that speakers built in, and POC continues to dominate the slopes with its line of helmets. Now for this winter the POC Receptor BUG Communication helmet will deliver the tunes via integrated Beats by Dr. Dre headphones that are built in the neck roll. This could give new meaning to the concept of head banging, as it provides a bass-heavy speaker into a snug fitting brain bucket.
There is also a remote and mic in the cord that makes switching songs while doing the downhill thing a snap, and taking calls is as easy as pressing a button. The communication neck roll is even solid separately and is compatible with other POC models.
Interbike Preview: POC Enters Road With Time Trial Helmet
We first got a glimpse of the POC Tempor helmet at the Olympics earlier this summer, and now the helmet’s designers have announced that it will make its American debut at next month’s Interbike trade show. Since we haven’t seen it up close we can’t comment on many of the details, but POC Sports noted that “the helmet provides the highest possible safety thanks to the appropriate thickness of the liner at exposed areas around the helmet. The ventilation system is optimized with regard to impact absorption without neglecting air flow and aerodynamics. In addition, the fluorescent color increases visibility. The Tempor helmet has overlapping upper and lower shells and includes a detachable visor.”
Hopefully we’ll get to try it on for size in Vegas.
POC Tempor Debuts at Olympics
At yesterday’s 2012 Olympic Games Bradley Wiggins of the UK and Kristin Armstrong of the USA took rode to the gold in the men’s and women’s Olympic Time Trial in cycling. Their efforts likely turned heads, but so did the new helmet that was donned by the Swedish riders.
This was the POC Tempor time trial helmet, which was developed by the Swedish company with the help of 2008 Olympic time trial silver medalist Gustav Erik Larsson. Larsson and teammate Emma Johansson each wore the helmet, and while they didn’t share the podium at these games, the helmet’s designers believe it could “promote maximum performance and aerodynamics, without sacrificing safety properties.” Continue reading POC Tempor Debuts at Olympics
