Nike+ Running Comes to Android, iOS Gets 4.0 Update

Nike is finally bringing its popular Nike+ Running app to the Android ecosystem. The app, which was originally released in 2010 for iOS, connects to nikeplus.com and lets runners track, share, and compare their runs using their smartphone.

Nike has simultaneously updated the iOS version of the app to version 4.0 and it too has assumed the Nike+ Running name. The GPS-enabled app now includes a widget option that lets you start a run from your phone’s home screen. You can also configure a list of “power songs” to start playing when you need a little motivation on the track.

Like most fitness apps, Nike+ Running lets users share their workout data on Facebook or Twitter. A new feature also lets you record the shoes you run in along with your cumulative mileage for that specific pair of shoes. Video after the jump

Nike Golf’s Lucky 13

Nike Golf has proven that 13 can be a lucky number the company is FREE to say. Nike Golf has introduced the new TW 13, which is inspired by Nike FREE technology. The distinctive shoes debuted last summer when Tiger Woods roared out with these, and now consumers will be able to get their feet in them beginning later this week.

The inspiration behind the Nike TW 13 footwear starts with the man himself, as Tiger Woods asked for a shoe that gave him a performance fit and feel that he experienced with his Nike FREE shoes that he used for running and training. The result is this shoe, which offers a natural motion engineered outsole that is designed to mimic and conform to the natural motion of the foot, coupled with the protection and traction of a lightweight performance golf shoe. This innovative outsole further allows the athlete to keep contact with the ground longer, better harnessing the energy of the foot to the shoe and, therefore, the shoe to the ground. Look Inside Nike Sustainability

Last week Nike released its Sustainable Business Performance Summary, in interactive form. This report is meant for consumer consumption and really illustrates the efforts the company is making to reduce, reuse, recycle and be responsible. It’s worth taking a look.

Upon loading the site you use the scroll wheel on your mouse to make the action start. As you scroll, a runner picks up speed across the screen. Scroll backwards and she runs backwards. Take a peek.

Nike Golf Aims for the Moon Again

While not technically aiming for the moon as our headline suggests, Nike Golf has introduced a line of limited edition Lunar Control Footwear for the 2012 Masters. These will be worn by most Nike Golf athletes at the first major championship of the season, The Masters.

“It’s fun to do something special for our athletes – to help them enjoy this occasion and mark the moment,” said Lee Walker, Nike Golf’s Footwear Product Director. Reigning Masters Champion, Charl Schwartzel, will be wearing the limited edition shoe as well as Paul Casey, Kevin Chappell, Stewart Cink, Simon Dyson, Ross Fisher, Lucas Glover and Francesco Molinari.  The footwear complements this season’s Tour Performance apparel, providing the athletes head-to-toe style and tour proven performance.

The new shoes promise exceptional cushioning for walking the course and the Flywire stability for powerful golf swings.  The shoes feature Lunarlon foam midsole proves durable and highly responsive yet offers the underfoot comfort and ground feel players desire. Nike Gives Prosthetic Leg Some Sole

This week we heard about a feel good story, where Nike is helping competitive amputee athletes by adapting its shoe technology for use with prosthetic legs. The Nike Sole has been designed to work with the Össur’s Flex-Run prosthetic running blade, which is used by competitive amputee athlete including Sarah Reinertsen (above).

The sole features a stacked design and comes with a stretch rubber leash over a rubber waffle outsole. Reportedly this material is made up of “regrind” soles that come from recycled shoes, while the polyurethane foam midsole is topped by a thermal plastic that was created from recycled air bags. So not only does this technology offer a benefit for amputee athletes but it is good for the planet in the process. And time will tell how this might help disabled athletes perform. Nike Fuels Up

Feel the burn, that’s one way to know you’re doing it right. But Nike has another idea – the company has introduced the FuelBand, a wristband device that is designed to measure daily movements of the wearer, tracking steps taken and calories burned. But the device also features the NikeFuel, a fitness metric that utilizes the rate of oxygen consumption and motion.

The device is meant to be something that most people wouldn’t even notice most of the time – much like a Livestrong wrist band or similar decorative wear. But this one actually tracks what you do, and can provide data to the wearer in the way of LED lights that go from red to yellow to green based on your activity goals. Red doesn’t mean stop however, but is there to tell the wearer to step it up while green indicates an active day. And not all the movement can be tracked, notably for use on a bike – or even mowing the lawn – where the hands aren’t in motion, but it still could be a good device to track those “background activities.” Continue reading Nike Fuels Up
