Personalized Poles

Char-PolesChar Poles of Salt Lake City haven’t so much reinvented the ski pole, but it certainly has expanded the possibilities of what the pole can do. While these work like normal ski poles on the slopes these offer a variety of customizable options in the grips. This provides useable Phillips and flathead screwdrivers, while the end of the grip can be used as a monopod mount for a camera. The baskets at the end of the poles even offer a bottle opener.

Char Pole is now looking to a RocketHub crowd funding campaign to raise money. Now is your chance to get in a pole position. Continue reading Personalized Poles

ICE-StoveIce is cold, but the I.C.E. Stove will help you get cooking. This 8-in-1 multi-tool offers the functionality of a wrench, saw, bottle opener, can opener, ruler, wing nut wrench, screw driver… and it can be put together to become a wood stove! Basically three of the tools panels are actually stove walls but the fourth is a seven-function multi-tool. The company recently unveiled this product at last month’s Outdoor Retailer Show Winter Market.

Nax to Grind

NaxThe Nax 2.0 doesn’t look like an axe, but that’s kind of the point. While axes served a purpose for centuries the Nax 2.0 is a 21st century take on the chopping tool. It was designed in collaboration with special forces soldiers, survival gear aficionados and preppers. The result is a multi-tool for the wilds that combines the features of kukri knife – the blade used by Nepalese Gurkhas for centuries – mixed with that of a machete and hatchet.

This easy-to-carry tool offers 4130 chromoly steel blade with a professional, zero ground edge. The blade was heat-treated to +48 HRC hardness so it can stand up to the end of the world and then some. It also includes a pommel with a pry and bottle opener, built-in gas shut-off wrench and a handle that is wrapped with 550 paracord. We’ve seen a lot of tools for the end of the world and this is one to add to that list.

Serious Tool Time

ToolsWe think of Swiss Army Knives as having a lot of tools, but the above tool probably is king of the multi-tools. Created by John S. Holler in Germany more than 100 years it is no mere pocket knife. The tool is part of a Smithsonian collection, and is now on loan from the National Museum of American History to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyo., for the exhibition “Journeying West: Distinctive Firearms from the Smithsonian.”

With around 100 pocket knife blades of every style imaginable, including a serrated blade, two dagger blades, as well as several different types of shears and scissors, an auger, a corkscrew, two saws, a lancet, button hook, cigar cutter, tuning fork, pens and mechanical pencils, mirror, and a straight razor it is truly the tool to beat.

Get Your Skate and Leather On

LeathermanLeather isn’t something you typically need for surfing and not really for skating, but that hasn’t stopped Leatherman from announcing a new line of pocket tools designed specifically for both sets of action sports. This follows the company’s new line of snowboard tools that were rolled out earlier this year.

The Grind and Jam pocket tools are aimed at the skateboarders while the Thurster and Shooter are for those who like to catch some waves. The former are designed to be carried or clipped on a belt, and feature flat and Phillips head screwdrivers, file, bottle openers, multiple open ended wrenches, hex driver, truck key and carabiner – in other words all the things to do some work on the board while on the go.

The surf tools feature bottle openers, bit drivers, wax comb, spring hooks, a lanyard hole, easy outs and a rubber bit holder.

With these tools small repairs won’t let the good times end.

Rebel Yell

Repair-RebelKickstarter is full of multi-tool projects, and some will take off and some will just remain concepts. We have a good feeling about the Repair Rebel, a titanium multi-tool that can attach under a bike seat. It offers 24 various tools, include a dozen or so hex heads, a T25 tork head, Phillips screw driver and even some spoke keys. It is larger than some of the ultra compact tools we’ve seen, but this provides all the tools in a single piece so that there is nothing to lose and no moving parts.

The disc style design also provides more grip than those too-compact tools. This Repair Rebel could just about start a revolution. Video after the jump

Ace of Spades

AceCampLast fall we heard about the Crovel Tactical shovel, which we said would be good for the end of the world, a zombie apocalypse or a mob style hit. Well, we think the AceCamp Survival Multi-Tool Shovel could give the Crovel a run for the money.

It is a shovel, a hatchet, a saw, a hammer, a wrench, a nail puller, bottle opener and compass. Inside it includes a fishing line and hook, matches, and even an emergency knife. This is a survival shovel on steroids and if civilization does come to an end we want this one in our hands. We wouldn’t mind taking it on the next outdoor adventure as well.
