Rawlings Has the MLB Covered

While military helmets may need to stop a bullet, Major League Baseball is requiring helmets that will be able to withstand a baseball strike of up to 100 miles per hour. This season approximately300 MLB players will wear the Rawlings Sporting Goods Company S100 Pro Comp batting helmet this season before the league-wide rule goes into effect next year.

The helmet, which is constructed of aerospace-grade carbon fiber, is 300 percent stiffer and 130 times stronger than traditional plastic helmets. The use of the helmet is part of a mandatory rule outlined by a new five-year collective bargaining agreement signed last November by MLB and the Major League Baseball Players Association. Is it the End for Wooden Hockey Sticks?

If you ever played floor hockey in school you probably used a cheap plastic stick. But the wooden sticks aren’t just missing in gym class; they’re pretty much gone from the big leagues too. According to a story from The Montreal Gazette last month the last of the holdouts of wooden sticks has switched to the composite variety last season.

This is an interesting turn of events, as just 20 years ago wood was all the rage and hardly anyone used composite materials. But as leather skates gave way to other materials, so wood has left the ice. This isn’t the only example where composite, or other so-called “space age” materials have replaced the tradition. Just 20 years ago steel was still widely used in high-end road bikes and now virtually every pro rides on carbon fiber, while golf clubs have gone from steel to titanium and other materials. AT&T U-Verse Offers Multiview of Cubs Games

 

If you can’t get out to the ballgame, but still want to root, root, root for the home team you can do so from home of course, but it isn’t quite the same. You’re always stuck watching what the TV director wants you to see. That is until now. This year AT&T and WGN-TV are offering a new TV app that lets users view up to four different camera angles of the Chicago Cubs home games at one time. Users can choose from the main WGN-TV Chicago game broadcast as well as six alternate camera angles. This gives viewers the ability to feel like they’re in the stands at Wrigley Field.
