Made in the USA: Skate Naked

The bare essentials is what Naked Longboards of Vancouver, Washington is all about. The boards are simple, durable and classy. And while they aren’t (yet) 100 percent made in the United States, the team is working on it.

The decks and wheels are American made and they’re looking for local truck and bearing suppliers. And when they say “they” they mean Jabien Letlow, the one man team that owns and operates Naked Longboards, who choose the name to emphasize that the boards feature no extra graphics, with exposed wood and clear grip tape. Even the logo is laser-etched to provide that “tattoo on board” look.

We like what we see.

Made in America: KineticShift.com Jersey!

We’ve been posting about Made in America items for nearly two years and in that time we’ve seen a lot of great items from across the country. This week concludes Made in America as a weekly Friday update, but we wi’ll still continue to report on American made products. In fact, we see so many products that deserve calling out that it just makes sense to do so outside of a weekly update.

We conclude the Friday cycle fittingly with KineticShift.com cycling jerseys that were made by Mt. Borah in Wisconsin. The customized apparel maker is notable in that they can do small runs of just six shirts, easy one-offs after that, and they offer fully customizable attire as well as semi-customized clothing. In fact, while our jerseys look like we designed them from scratch these were actually quite simple thanks to the semi-custom forms that Mt. Borah provides. Made in America: Thought Out Company – iPod and iPad Mounts

Thought One Bike Mount

Do you own an iPad, iPod, or any other brand of smart phone or tablet? Have you tried to buy a mount for your device? Stroll into any Apple Store or Best Buy and prepare to be inundated with an overwhelming number of choices offering countless features to best hold your tablet or phone.

What you may also notice when reading the packages, often printed at the very bottom of the package on the back, is where the item is made. “Designed in the USA, Made in China” is a common phrase used by companies, possibly mimicking Apple’s labeling on most of their products. If you read the packaging on enough of these types of products, you might think that there is no alternatives to these types of items being produced overseas, but there are a few aftermarket accessory choices that are actually designed in America AND made in America. One such company is Thought Out of Shelton, Connecticut, which has been producing America made, innovative products since being founded in 2004. Video after the jump

Made in America: Elevengear Cycling Lifestyle Apparel

Saturn V Jersey

“Designed by Apple in California, Assembled in China”. If you are reading this post on an iPhone or iPad, that is what is printed on the back. The Kindle Fire is not any better with the line “Assembled in China”. Long ago we lost a majority of electronics manufacturing to Asia along with many other goods, but lately if you look at a tag for cycling gear, production for that type of product is also migrating out of the U.S. This is not the case with every company that designs and sells cycling apparel. One company that we have mentioned a few times, Elevengear Cycling Lifestyle, still believes in the concept of designing AND manufacturing their apparel in the same country, not out sourcing to the cheapest sweatshop. Those individuals who choose to start a business during these difficult economic times have my admiration, especially those who chose to start one in a market that some view as being very saturated. During this the SIA Demo Days at Winter Park, OZ Snowboards took the opportunity to show off their new line of boards for the 2012/13 season. Continue reading SIA Demo Day: OZ Snowboards

Made in America: Okabashi Brand Shoes

In a country of over 300 million people, the United States has very few manufacturers making shoes for all of those feet. Most of those jobs have headed outside our boarders into countries with lower wages and lower environmental regulations, but not all have left. In fact, there are some companies that have started up and are thriving based on the idea of creating a niche product instead of trying to become overly diversified. One such company is Okabashi Brands, Inc. of Buford, GA. Their low-cost, environmentally friend shoes are 100% recyclable and are made in America. Made in America: Dirt King USA Tricycles

The day after Thanksgiving in the U.S. officially kicks off the Christmas shopping season. Some of you might have been proactive and have gotten all of your shopping out of the way, but if you are like many, you haven’t even started to even think about it. If you have not started your shopping yet and there is a toddler or even a big kid on your list, you might be interested in checking out the tricycles from Dirt King USA.

Dirt King USA of WaKeeney, KS is a subsidiary of MCM Manufacturing Inc. After being in the agricultural manufacturing business for 13 years and later expanding into the oil field industry, MCM created Dirt King in 1983 after both of those industries softened and the need to diversify was evident. The first Dirt King product was actually a scooter, but was soon followed by a three-wheeler or tricycle.

Made in America: Aero Tech Designs

Descente, Bike Nashbar, Terry Precision, Head and Giant are familiar names in cycling apparel, but a name you may not be familiar with is Aero Tech Designs, Inc. of Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. For over 25 years these companies, along with many others, have contracted with Aero Tech Designs to design and manufacture cycling apparel – all happening from their facility in this Pittsburgh suburb.

Founded by Cathy Schnaubelt Rogers, an avid cyclist and former racer herself, Aero Tech Designs prides itself on not only producing cycling apparel in the U.S.A., but also sourcing all of the raw material from domestic suppliers. The 10mm Italian inspired chamois is American made; the fabric is knit domestically in South Carolina; the thread is from American company Efrid of North Carolina – even the paper labels are printed locally in a domestic paper facility. Materials are brought together and assembled in Coraopolis by American workers. The company then sells the goods under the Aero Tech Design name.

Get a Grip

Having a good grip on a firearm is not only better for comfort, but also safer. With older, and more favored firearms this can be an issue as owners might not want to make cosmetic changes, or risk damage. But now gun owners can get a grip, as in the Tuff 1 Grip Covers, which are made of highly-elastic and robust rubberized material imprinted with a variety of unique patterns that provide just the right amount of hand grip traction.

The Tuff 1 grip Covers can easily be fitted to revolvers, semi-auto handguns, molded grips and even AR and AK rifles and shotguns. These come in a one size fits all, and are made of a proprietary formulated rubberized material that has incredible stretch (up to 200 percent) and shape retention and will not alter the shape of the firearm’s grips. The grips also will help reduce recoil as well. They roll on like a pair of socks, and roll off the same.

The grips further provide a bit of individuality too, featuring multiple surface patterns, including boa snake, double cross and a skull and cross; and are available in black, olive drab, desert tan even hot pink. These are made in the U.S.A., and have a limited lifetime warranty. Not bad for $14.95. So now you just need to get a grip.
