Simple is truly underrated, but the Boker Plus Albatros Knife might just change that perception. This simple steel blade is housed within two thick plates of titanium to keep the weight down while still being one strong knife. Unfolded it is nearly seven inches of serious cutting power for the campsite, hiking trial or even the backyard.

Goto Vargo
We have a serious appreciation of titanium at KineticShift and for that reason alone find the Vargo Titanium Wharn-Clip Knife to be kind of cool. Add the fact that it is made from a single piece of the super strong medal and that it is easy to sharpen over and over, plus it features an integrated clip and that just make it super cool. This is a knife that can is light enough you won’t notice it but it can still be looped to a bag, on the belt or vest and be there when you need it.
Custom Cutters
There are plenty of knives on the market that will feel like an extension of your hand, but if you want something truly unique and customized for you head to the bench – make that Benchmade, which offers a custom knife builder solution. Users can choose from four folding knife styles, determine the steel they want for the blade as well as blade type and edge. There are options for personalized text, colors and even the ability to add images. It is the next best thing to mining the ore and forging your own knife from scratch.
Minimal Blade
We do live in an era where more can be less – it is called minimalism, and the Ontario Knife Company Bushcraft Field Knife truly maximizes the value of minimalist design. This hand-crafted knife is made of high-end carbon steel, with hardwood handle, and features a design that is aimed at survivalists, hunters and outdoor enthusiasts.
The full-tang OKC Bushcraft Field Knife measures 10.12 inches, while the five inch blade culminates with a high, off-center point. The flat-ground design allows for an increased cutting surface and a fine wood carving and meat cutting ability. The industrial grade 5160 carbon steel ensures the OKC Bushcraft Field Knife will hold its edge longer and sharpen easily.
Made in America: The River Cuts Through It
White River Knives is a new company but it is now producing knives that suggest years of experience. It now offers ultra high quality all American products made with all American materials. White River’s production methods involve a blend of CNC machining and handcrafting processes utilizing a variety of woods, synthetics, cork, and stag for handles and a wide variety of standard and exotic steels.
Among the new offerings is its fillet knife, which the company claims is probably the best in the market for a couple of reasons: It is constructed of American made 440C high-carbon stainless steel, while these knives are designed to cut fish flesh as thin as a sheet of paper if desired. It also offers 54 Rockwell C scale steel blades that are very flexible and yet hold a razor edge that is still easy to sharpen. Continue reading Made in America: The River Cuts Through It
Gerber’s New Edge
We’ve seen – and will continue – to see plenty of utility knives for the trail and campsite. There are knives that could survive the end of the world and be ready for more. Knives that can cut tree limbs, ropes and tin cans; but would you want those to slice or dice the food you’re going to eat?
The Freescape Camp Kitchen Knife from Gerber is a rugged outdoor knife that is meant for cooking. Its razor sharp blade can mimic a chef’s knife and it can handle most food prep, but it features a rugged design that can handle the campsite. Back home it is even dishwasher safe – which is something most of those survival style knives likely are not!
On the Double
Spyderco has you fixed for folding blades with the Double Bevel, which draws its name from its most distinguishing characteristic—its unique double-ground blade. As with all Spyderco folders, the Double Bevel’s VG-10 stainless steel blade features the maker’s Trademark Round Hole for ambiidextrous one-handed opening, while the flat-ground section offers a distal taper that terminates in an Americanized tanto-style point for an exceptional balance of tip strength and sharpness. The tip is also full-flat-ground for superior edge geometry and low-friction cutting performance. This is a pocket knife that will get the job done.
Better Caliber of Hobo
This economy certainly has left some to do more with less. Case Knives even introduced a liner of so-called “Hobo” knives including the Camo Caliber Hobo. While it isn’t designed for an upscale hobo, it does offer a blade, fork and spoon in a single package. So perhaps it is for the upscale hobo – one who also desires a bit of camouflage.
Fighting Knife
Most of us probably aren’t going to get into a knife fight – and we’re certainly not suggesting anyone try it – but a knife designed for the rigors of combat can endure just about anything. That’s the concept behind the OKC Chimera, which incorporates key features inspired by some of the company’s most popular survival and military-issued knives to deliver unparalleled performance, versatility and durability.
“The OKC Chimera is an important piece in the broad array of new products Ontario Knife has planned to release during our 125th Anniversary year”, said Kenneth Trbovich, president and CEO of OKC. “We are taking Ontario’s long and storied history and harnessing its experience to drive us forward into a new era.”
The Chimera – named after the monstrous fire-breathing creature of Greek mythology – features a high quality design and production. It offers a 13 5/8-inch full-tang blade that is built for ruggedness, long life and superior penetrating power. A portion of this 7 7/8-inch long, 200-inch thick blade features a broad serration pattern, perfect for handling a wide range of survival assignments, while the phosphate coated steel butt cap can be used as a glass breaker to assist in escape efforts.
The knife also features a set of machined holes that allows the knife to be affixed to spear-poles and other objects using cords, wires or even vines. In other words if you are going to bring just one knife on your next adventure, this might be the one to chose.
The Baladeo Goes Retro
The Swiss Army Knife isn’t the only name in blades. The Baladeo Le Retro Knife evokes the knives that the company made in France in the early 1950s, and as the name suggests it has a true retro look but is far from light on features. It includes two blades, a saw, a can opener, a punch, a corkscrew, a piercing tool, and, of course, a bottle opener, along with a stainless steel body and true blonde horn handle. Thus it truly mixes form and function like a good knife should.
The Sage Series Speaks
Spyderco’s Sage Series is not just another line of folding knives. These feature an innovative lock mechanism that has helped define modern folding knife technology, and each member of the Sage family shares the same basic design profile and unifying features like a flat-ground, leaf-shaped CPM S30V blade, an ergonomic handle with textured forefinger choil and thumb ramp, and a reversible tip-up wire clip.
The Sage3 recognizes one of his most significant inventions: the Bolt Action Lock, which was designed by Blackie Collins, a legend in the knife industry. This locking mechanism consists of a spring-loaded steel bolt that wedges between a ramp on the back of the blade tang and the inside of the handle back strap when the blade is opened. Retracting a sliding button attached to the bolt releases the lock, allowing the blade to close safely without the user’s fingers crossing the path of the blade edge.
This line also supports a worthy cause, and proceeds from the sale of every Sage Series folder are donated to the Alzheimer’s Association, Colorado Chapter.
Cultural Blade
Knife maker Spyderco has developed its Ethnic Series to pay homage to the distinctive knives associated with cultures from around the world. The Hungarian Folder is just one such example, and it was created with design insight from Hungarian architect Szakonyi Gábor.
The result captures the graceful lines of the traditional “fejesgörbe” (“header curved”) folding knife from Central Europe. Szakonyi drafted the original design for the Hungarian on paper before having it translated into steel by a custom knifemaker. The heart of this Hungarian Folder is the premium CTS XHP blade, which features a long, straight spine that tapers gently to meet the sweeping, curved cutting edge, while the trademark Spyderco Round Hole provides swift, positive one-handed opening with either hand.
The Gunny’s Knife

It is limited to just 1,000 pieces and each knife comes with a handmade leather sheath, along with a walnut box for storage and display. This knife will be a fine cutting tool for years to come, but it might be so nice looking you’ll never want to take it out of the box.
