Serious Tent

Cabela-Ultimate-Alaknak-TenWhen we think of tents we think of a tarp that is held up by a stick. That’s probably more roughing it than we’d like, but the Cabela’s Ultimate Alaknak Tent has us rethinking what one (or for that matter a dozen) can put in a tent. At nearly $1,500 this is one expensive tent, but it offers 13×27 feet of space, more than many studio apartments. It can sleep a dozen people, offers three multi-panel windows along with an attached awning. It is held up by 10 sturdy tent poles and features a waterproof polyester material to provide those inside from the elements. After camping in this tent you might not want to go home.

Holiday Gift Guide: One Bad Looking Jacket

Badlands-EXOBadlands have released its new EXO rain series, which includes the Badlands EXO Jacket. Designed for those who will head out to hunt in all conditions, according to the company this jacket is designed repel water better than a seasoned sea otter’s pelt. It also contains 4-X scent containment technology thanks to a Dupont Repel DWR-treated polyester layer. This stops the water from coming in and the wearer’s scent from going out.

Not a bad idea.

Hunt GPS

eXplorist-350H-Outdoor-GPSThe thrill of the hunt is only thrilling so long as you aren’t lost in the woods. The new Magellan eXplorist 350H GPS for Hunters will ensure that you find your way. It features pre-loaded detailed base maps with contour elevations and Game Management Units (GMU), Digital Globe satellite imagery for virtual scouting ability, hunting specific waypoints, hunting geofences and a rugged, camouflage exterior.

It even ships with a one-year subscription to Digital Globe satellite imagery that gives hunters the ability to “virtually scout” a future hunt location from the comfort of home, where a satellite view of the area intended as hunting grounds is provided. Hunters can then quickly identify areas of interest such as game funnels, potential feeding areas, and suitable glassing locations. The areas of interest can be marked and waypoints loaded into the eXplorist 350H, ready for the field along with an area of Digital Globe satellite imagery.

Hunting-specific waypoint icons can also be used to mark animal tracks, rub marks, water and food sources while in the field and are readily accessible on the Magellan eXplorist 350H, so users won’t have to type in information. Points marked in the field can be even be uploaded back into Magellan’s VantagePoint software application on a computer, allowing any hunter to build up their own hunting specific database over time. The geofence feature of the Magellan eXplorist 350H will further automatically alert hunters when they are approaching any GMU boundary to ensure that they stay within the area that they are permitted to hunt.

The eXplorist 350H is ready for the hunt, but will you be?

Press release after the jump

Made in America: Kifaru International

Backpacking and backcountry snow sports can be an excellent way to stay active and enjoy nature. Whether it is a day trip or multi-day adventure, some gear will be required. Food, water, a tent and a stove are just a few of the items that might be needed. Start piling up the gear and it is not inconceivable that your backpack could weigh over 50-pounds. It doesn’t sound like much, but after hours on the trail, that 50-pounds might as well be 1,000-pounds. Lightening the load can be done by reducing the amount of gear and supplies, or reducing the weight could be achieved by starting off with lighter weight gear. There are certainly a number of companies producing lightweight backpacking gear; just most of them have left the U.S. to manufacture their product line overseas. Kifaru International of Wheat Ridge, Colorado produces an assortment of lightweight backpacking gear and unlike their competition, they are still manufacturing their product line on U.S. soil. Fieldline Lines Up Women’s Backpack

Hunting gear isn’t typically made with a woman in mind, but Fieldline has addressed this issue with a new line of backpacks that feature durability, comfort and convenience and are tailor made with the female hunter in mind. The new Fieldline Women’s Black Canyon Backpack is roomy enough to accommodate essential items, but scaled down for a female wearer’s size and shape. The padded back and yoked shoulders further ensure stability and comfort, while a three-pouch organizer, three-quarter-inch-opening main compartment and one-side water bottle pocket offer versatility in stashing everything from extra layers to GPS units to snacks. The pack also features a nifty Gear-Lock Modular Locking System, which offers customization for the user, allowing the pack to transform into multiple configurations, before a trip or even on the fly.

The pack is available in Mossy Oak Break-Up or Realtree AP to make users inconspicuous in virtually any environment, but with just a dash of pink to show some personality too!

Hunting Calls Goes High-Tech

In the old days hunters used their hands, bits of straw and wood to emulate the sounds of their prey. Eventually this gave way to the plastic calls that hunters used for generations. My grandfather had many of those and frankly they sounded more like a cartoon character than a real animal, but maybe the old man never used them right.

He also never really understood the concept of a digital camera and always asked me where the film went too. He probably tried rewinding many a DVD. So I’m sorry that he didn’t get to ever try out an electronic game call. Those would probably have thrown him for a loop. Having heard a few I have to say they sound pretty convincing.

Cass Creek Calls has a line of products including the Mini Coyote Squeaker, a companion to the larger Mega Amp Coyote Call. This is the newest product in their line of light and compact callers that fit comfortably in the hand. These can also be strapped to a firearm, belt or pack. These feature an easy to use push button operation with Instant Interrupt. The Mini Coyote Squeaker provides five authentic animal sounds to attract coyotes, including Turkey Polut, Rat Distress, Pup Whine, Grouse Distress and Rodent Distress. Apparently coyotes go after animals in distress, and I thought all you needed was a road runner!
