Study Snow Sports Need Brain Bucket

It is all too easy to think of soft fluffy snow, something that isn’t so bad to land on while skiing or snowboarding. But a new Johns Hopkins-led study, which was supported by the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of General Medical Sciences and the American College of Surgeons’ C. James Carrico Fellowship for the Study of Trauma and Critical Care, has founded that the use of helmets by skiers and snowboarders decreases the risk and severity of head injuries. It can also save lives.

More importantly, the findings also debunk long-held beliefs by some that the use of helmets could in fact give wearers a so-called false sense of security, or even promote dangerous behavior that might increase injuries.

“There really is a great case to be made for wearing helmets,” says Adil H. Haider, M.D., M.P.H., an associate professor of surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the leader of the study published in the November issue of the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery. “By increasing awareness and giving people scientific proof, we hope behavior changes will follow.” Continue reading Study Snow Sports Need Brain Bucket

Compacting Helmet

Back in February we took note of the Agency 360 designed Overade folding helmet, which reportedly went into production. But for those looking for a compact helmet we recently came across the Carrera foldable helmet, which can reduce size by folding up like an accordion.

The helmet has no solid structure going across the front or back so it should provide good air circulation. We were worried that it might not do all it could to protect the head, but it apparently meets the EN 1078 safety certification requirements so that is good enough for us! It should enter production later this year and be ready to unfold when you need it!

Interbike Preview: POC Enters Road With Time Trial Helmet

We first got a glimpse of the POC Tempor helmet at the Olympics earlier this summer, and now the helmet’s designers have announced that it will make its American debut at next month’s Interbike trade show. Since we haven’t seen it up close we can’t comment on many of the details, but POC Sports noted that “the helmet provides the highest possible safety thanks to the appropriate thickness of the liner at exposed areas around the helmet. The ventilation system is optimized with regard to impact absorption without neglecting air flow and aerodynamics. In addition, the fluorescent color increases visibility. The Tempor helmet has overlapping upper and lower shells and includes a detachable visor.”

Hopefully we’ll get to try it on for size in Vegas.

Riddell Reinvents the Football Helmet

As summer draws to a close it means football season is around the corner and this year many players will be donning a very new helmet. For the 2012 season Riddell introduced its new 360, the latest in a long line of next generation football helmets.

The 360 might not be technically “the helmet of the future,” but it could be the starting point at where the future will begin. The helmet has been tested against 1.4 million impacts but yet it isn’t actually guaranteed to prevent concussions – at least not yet. The new 360 tries to reduce the amount of movement the helmet has on the wearer’s head, and to accomplish this Riddell has installed an “occipital lock” that can keep the helmet firm and stable on the wearer’s head. Riddell Donates Helmets to Youth Football Programs

Riddell is donating 1,000 new Riddell Revolution Speed football helmets to youth football leagues in need of new equipment. Many school and league programs have too many kids participating in the program, or the equipment costs are too much to keep up with. Unfortunately, it’s the kids who are put in jeopardy when teams use old equipment. Continue reading Riddell Donates Helmets to Youth Football Programs

Interbike Preview: Shoe Maker Has Your Head Covered

Cycling shoe maker Vittoria has for three decades managed to provide some very stylish footwear for riders and for 2013 the company will have rider’s heads covered as well. The company is jumping into the helmet market for 2013 with five models, ranging from $70 to $250 – with the latter being the top end V700.

This features a co-molded design with structural carbon fiber and rear dial closure. With 25 vents riders will likely not get too hot headed either. The helmets will be on hands at next month’s Interbike in Las Vegas and we look forward to seeing them.

Outdoor Retailer Show Preview: Climbing Helmet

When climbing the last thing you want is extra weight, but sometimes having a helmet is a good idea. Fortunately SIROCCO from Petzl has a compromise in mind with an ultra-lightweight brain bucket that is just 165 grams. It is features a monobloc construction that takes advantage of expanded polypropylene (EPP) to minimize the weight while still being able to provide excellent impact resistance.

And since having a free hand is a lot to ask for, and two free hands is often a luxury many climbers don’t have, the helmet’s magnetic buckle allows the chinstrap to be attached with one hand.

Camera Helmet

We’ve seen a lot of helmet cameras but now we’ve seen the first truce camera helmet – as in a helmet designed specifically to be used with a helmet-mounted camera. Now the first thing to keep in mind is that many bicycle race organizations have banned the use of helmet-mounted cameras, and some cycling groups recommend mounting the camera somewhere besides a helmet as the gadget can actually cause head and neck injury in a crash.

But if you absolutely want or even NEED to have a helmet-mounted camera, then consider the AMARA CAM helmet from Kali Protectives. This brain bucket features a built-in mounting point that accepts a number of popular sport camcorders and even head lamps. The helmets are made of polycarbonate shell and EPS (expanded polystyrene) foam liner that should help keep the head protected nicely enough. Continue reading Camera Helmet

Virginia Tech Releases 2012 Football Helmet Ratings

Last year Virginia Tech – Wake Forest School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences began testing adult football helmets. The school just released its 2012 ratings, and added two helmets with five-out-of-five stars, joining last year’s pick.

Testing the helmets is a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded project. The test uses the STAR Evaluation System, which is an acronym for the Summation of Tests for the Analysis of Risk. It involves performing 120 impacts on each helmet model at multiple locations and impact energies to evaluate the degree of head protection.

The Riddell Revolution Speed earned five stars last year. This year the Rawlings Quantum Plus and Riddell 360 also earned five stars. The Rawlings implus and Rawlings Quantum each earned four stars, which still falls in the recommended category for Virginia Tech. Continue reading Virginia Tech Releases 2012 Football Helmet Ratings
