Baseball’s New Helmet

With opening day for Major League Baseball just weeks away fans might not notice a big difference that might help keep players safe. This year will see the widespread introduction of a new batting helmet. Rawlings, the official provider of helmets to the MLB, is providing teams with the S100 Pro Comp.

This is the latest helmet designed for batters, and it is just a fraction of an inch larger and about an ounce heavier than traditional helmets, but its carbon fiber shell promises to be about 300 percent stiffer and 130 times stronger than helmets made of plastic. It is designed to provide protection against balls thrown at speeds up to 100 miles per hour – compared to the 68mph of the older helmets. Continue reading Baseball’s New Helmet

Run in the Sun

From Men’s Health: Why You Should Move Your Workout Outdoors

Helmet to Crossover from Winter to Spring

The Nutcase Crossover helmet, which is distinctive for its glittery gold finish, will make the transition and let users cross from winter to summer. This bicycle helmet features removable fleece ear flaps, which can provide plenty of warmth during the cold winter commuters, but can also be removed as the weather turns. While it probably doesn’t offer enough ventilation for summer riding, it is ideal for those cooler days.

Helmet Study to Include Hockey and Baseball

Much has been made about concussions and football helmets, but now the Virginia Tech – Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences is looking to expand its ground-breaking research to include hockey, baseball, softball and lacrosse. The five year plan will look to rate helmets worn in those sports and determine the ability the helmets have to lessen the likelihood of a concussion resulting from head impact.

The ratings for the helmets will begin with hockey in the fall of this year, followed by youth football in 2015, and then baseball, softball and lacrosse in 2016.

SIA 2013: Not a Combat Helmet but a Combyn Helmet

At the SIA Snowshow in Denver last week Giro introduced a new “soft-shell” helmet for the snowsport industry that can survive multiple impacts and still keep the wearer protected. The Combyn helmet can flex and bend under pressure and like “Stretch Armstrong” return to its original shape.

The helmet reportedly utilizes a patent-pending liner made with foam to absorb impact, with two outer layers of foam that are designed to take both “high and low energy shots” and be flexible yet durable. The helmet features eight vents, and removable goggle retailer. It will comply with the CE EC 1077 safety standard. It will be available in August for next year’s winter sport season.

Camera Helmet

We’ve seen numerous cameras that can mount to a helmet, but now the Video Head is a camera system built into the helmet. This solves the problem of ensuring that a camera is positioned correctly, and also helps reduce the risk of injury from wearing a camera on top of a helmet.

The Video Head helmet features an integrated lens along with all the electronics within the brain bucket. The lens is positioned directly to the front of the helmet, while an LED along with beeps as audio cues let the wearer know the camera is operating. Three levels of helmet systems will be made available, and range from a basic model that offers VGA resolution with 60-degree angle lens to 720p (30fps) version with 120-degree lens, and finally to a top of the line version with 1080p (60fps) resolution with 127-degree angle. All three models will include a mini mic for audio recording, and Video Head will be ready to go this spring.

New Calls for Brain Buckets on the Slopes

The Brain Injury Association of Canada is calling for new standards for helmets used in alpine sports, and that helmets imported and sold are not currently meeting safety standards set by the Canadian Standards Association. This comes following the tragic death of a 16-year old boy this past holiday weekend.

Richard Kinar, association spokesperson said that at present most helmets do not meet Canadian standards. According to the CSA, international standards are not as strong as those set by in Canada since 2009. This has KineticShift asking whether the international standards should be reviewed – and not just for alpine and snow sports but for all sports.

ARF Compares Certified to Non-Certified Helmets

All helmets are not the same, and the Athlete Recovery Fund conducted the recent Certified vs. Non-Certified Bicycle Helmet Impact Test above. The video above shows the difference in protection between the two. Use your head and chose the right brain bucket!

Cardboard Brain Bucket

We’ve been pleased to see the near constant innovation and the accompanying evolution that comes with it in the realm of athletic head protection. Much has been made with sensors that can determine if an injury has occurred or even call for helmet when the wear suffers a head injury.

Of course preventing any injury at all is what the real purpose for wearing a helmet is and thus there has been a lot of innovation in the materials. There have been a number of new materials but Kranium is a helmet that takes a step back, namely looking at cardboard rather than something more complex like carbon fiber. The helmet is the invention of Royal College of Arts student Anirudha Surabhi, who devised the concept and created prototype that is 15 percent lighter than standard helmets but at the same time could absorb up to three times the impact energy during a collision. Music Powered POC Helmet

We’ve seen a number of snowboard helmets that speakers built in, and POC continues to dominate the slopes with its line of helmets. Now for this winter the POC Receptor BUG Communication helmet will deliver the tunes via integrated Beats by Dr. Dre headphones that are built in the neck roll. This could give new meaning to the concept of head banging, as it provides a bass-heavy speaker into a snug fitting brain bucket.

There is also a remote and mic in the cord that makes switching songs while doing the downhill thing a snap, and taking calls is as easy as pressing a button. The communication neck roll is even solid separately and is compatible with other POC models.
