Color of Controversy

Marco-PantaniThis week the Giro d’Italia kicks off in Northern Ireland and begins surprisingly on a Friday – not a Saturday. The biggest controversy however could be off the course as Rapha has launched a memorial jersey in honor of Marco Pantani. While a percentage of each jersey will go to the Pantani Foundation, which encourages troubled teens to get into cycling, the choice of jersey still remains a bold choice – given that Pantani was disqualified from the 1999 Italian classic for testing positive for performance enhancing drugs.

However, some are seeing that Pantani still brought a certain level of panache to the sport, and through the foundation could perhaps some youngsters to steer clear of trouble.

Checking In

Italy-Bike-HotelsThe “Boot” of Italy has a lot to offer in the way of sights, foods and so much more. While there are plenty of options to drive from point to point in Italy, why not take a bicycle – arguably the truest form of Italian transportation. Consider it a personal Giro d’Italia!

And while many hotels in America and elsewhere don’t always appreciate riders bringing a bicycle, this isn’t a problem in Italy, where almost 50 hotels make up a comprehensive consortium. From the Italian coastlines to the Italian Alps, and through the country side these hotels promise a unique experience for customers, along with many biking accommodations that include mechanical workshops and bike garages to Italian style dinners. There are even options for relaxing massage therapy and spa – not to mention free laundry for sweaty cycling apparel!

Will Universal Sports Bring Giro d’Italia Into Spot Light

Everyone knows the Tour de France, it is of course the biggest event in cycling. But past that… other than cycling enthusiasts few actually know about other races. No doubt residents in places such as California can’t help but hear about local events such as the Tour of California, which will kick off next week, but what about the other events?

Beginning this weekend, and thus overlapping with the Tour of California, is the Giro d’Italia – also known to cycling fans as the Giro. This is actually one of the three grand tours with the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España(Tour of Spain) as being the other one. So why don’t more Americans know it? Part of it is that it just hasn’t gotten the same level of coverage. Continue reading Will Universal Sports Bring Giro d’Italia Into Spot Light

Anti-Doping Goes High Tech

Franco Pellizotti

Discovery News is reporting that a new “biological passport” has been developed to keep pace (or is it pace line) with performance-enhancing drugs and those who use them. This new technology measures blood and body chemistry over time, and thus can help authorities monitor professional cyclists more closely.

Sadly, one rider Franco Pellizotti – who was a favorite for this year’s Giro d’Italia – has already been caught using performance-enhancing drugs from this new technology. The Italian rider was banned for irregular blood levels, which suggested he doped. Let’s hope this new biological passport will end doping and make professional cycling pure again.
