Tern’s Flying Suit

TernA folding bike is a great way to save space and take it on the go. Now Tern has introduced something that can allow a folding bike to truly go places. The Tern FlightSuit offers a protective cover that allows users to pack a Tern bike into a standard-sized suitcase for airline travel.

“For many, the idea of bringing a bike on vacation is heaven, but can be daunting,” said Dwight Jurling, director global marketing at Tern. “Dedicated cases are expensive, often incur oversize baggage charges, and take up valuable storage space when not in use. The Tern FlightSuit eliminates these concerns by letting travelers turn a normal suitcase into a bike travel case when one is needed.”

The Tern FlightSuit can be used with off-the-shelf large suitcases, and includes custom protectors for the bike’s seatpost, handlepost, pedals and dropouts. Pads are made of durable 240D nylon bonded with 5 mm, dual-layer padding, to protect the bike during transit. Instructions are printed right on the suitcase pad showing how to fit the bike into the suitcase.

GI Go

Gi-BikeWhen we think of a “G.I. Bike” we think of something American soldiers used in World War II, but the Gi Bike is something different. It is a full-sized, folding, electric bike designed for travel around town.

It folds up or down in just three seconds, and can run 40 miles on battery. It even offers smartphone integration with apps and maps, and designed to handle the mean streets with side lights that help riders be seen, while an anti-theft safety lock ensures the bike is there where you left it. This is Gi is ready to roll. Video after the jump

Most Foldable Bike Yet

FUBiThere are no shortages of folding bikes to be seen at shows such as Interbike and the market is growing as commuters look for options that allow a bike to be brought safely indoors. The FUBi is no mere folding bike but one that could be the most compact full-sized foldable bike in the world.

The bike can fold so small that two FUBi bikes can fit in a single Smart Car. As the video below shows the inventors, who are currently looking to Kickstarter to get this one rolling, might just be onto something. Video after the jump

Tern Looks to Fold in Stuttgart

Commuting by bicycle to a metro station might just get riders only part way to work, especially if the distance from the station at the other end is far. Plus most commuters probably don’t love the idea of leaving a bike in the elements all day. But Tern Bicycles, maker of folding bikes, is working with the Stuttgart Transit Authority to provide a special folding bike at a special bike. Unlike regular bikes these folding ones can even be taken on the train during rush hour – providing riders a way to ride a bike, ride a train and ride a bike the rest of the way.

Eurobike Preview: Tern Looks to Swoop In

Urban transport bike maker Tern certainly took the folding bike market by storm in recent years, and now the company looks to swoop in again, fittingly with its Swoop series of bicycles that will feature an ultra low-step frame design. The Swoop offers a top tube that is only 11-inches (28cm) off the ground, which makes it one of the lowest step bikes on the market.

The design offers the promise of a low center of gravity that enhances stability, especially for less experienced cyclists. It also offers an upright riding geometry because who really needs to “race” to the office or store, and this puts less stress on the arms and neck, while also aiding in the ability to see the road ahead. Interbike 2010: Fold and Change

Change is coming, and we hope this time it is actually means something. We’re not talking about anything political either, but rather the Change Folding Bike. We’ve seen a few folding bikes we like a lot, and we’ve seen a lot of folding bikes we don’t like at all. The Change is one that might actually “change” everything. It features the traditional diamond frame – with a few sexy curves thrown in for good measure – and more importantly this is one of those bikes that doesn’t offer tiny wheels and a messed up center of gravity. It offers full sized 26-inch tires, disc brakes, is compatible with standard bike parts and weights just around 11.5 Kg. Continue reading Interbike 2010: Fold and Change

Bike Worth Jumping Out of a Plane to Ride

The Montague Paratrooper Will Dive Into Action

You probably wouldn’t want to jump out an airplane with your Trek or Cannondale mountain bike, and that’s not a slight at either company. The truth is just that those companies make a very good product for hitting the trails, but it isn’t meant to take this kind of dive. Most commercial mountain bikes can survive a crash, but not to do the airborne soldier thing. That’s where Montague comes in. The company produces a range of high quality folding bikes, and in their off-road fleet is the Paratrooper.

This airborne warrior utilizes the CLIX system, which allows the bike to be folded up in under 20 seconds without the use of any tools. A flip of the quick release turns a full-sized off road machine into a compact package that is ready to travel. While actual folding time is reported to be about 20 seconds, we’d recommend you take your time, but we’re sure you probably have a minute or to spare to do it right.
