Water Power

Kayak-Power-MeterPower meters are the new thing in cycling – well, maybe not the new thing but certainly the hot thing in tracking effort and energy spent. Now One Giant Leap is looking to do for kayakers what various companies have done for cyclists.

The company is introducing the world’s first Kayak Power Meter. This carbon fiber, adjustable, split-shaft can track power output, power balance (including left stroke vs. right stroke) and even stroke-rate. This unique paddle can sync – but hopefully not sink – via ANT+ and can used to record power, power balance, stroke-rate and even boat speed and heart rate. The Kayak Power Meter can be used with various software including Garmin Connect and TrainingPeaks.

Carbon Disc Print

Carbon-DiscFor those who like to play Frisbee or Disc Golf there is now a very serious disc – one made of carbon fiber. While it isn’t available in stores just yet, Tyler Seamons is looking to Kickstarter to help his concept take flight. He’s designed a 10 inch 175 gram disc made of carbon fiber that features a heavy duty polyurethane plastic protective edge.

The concept actually includes two styles, a Disc Golf style driver and a Frisbee shaped version. The former is meant to fly greater distances while the latter is shaped for shorter distances and for catching. Video after the jump

Carbon Print

Joe-PaintingMuch is made of the so-called carbon footprint, but another topic we’ve watched is what happens to old carbon fiber – as it can’t easily be recycled. However, Joe’s Bicycle Painting could help ensure that carbon fiber can’t so easily be damaged. The company is reportedly evolving to create its own carbon repair and painting operation called Carbon Solutions.

Not only can the company repair damaged carbon fiber, but it can match the paint and decals and have the bike looking like new. Best of all this keeps an old frame out of a landfill.

Uncaged

Lightweight-EdelhelferWhen the company name is Lightweight you know that the products won’t be heavy weights, but the German bicycle component maker has introduced the Edelhelfer (German for “Precious Helper” or “Super Domestique”) water bottle cage that tips the scales at just 18 grams. The carbon fiber cage has the look of the company’s distinctive aero carbon spokes, and even comes with lightweight alloy screws to further cut down on weight. At a reported 65 euros the heaviest thing about this one might be the price.

Black Beauty

BlackBraidWe’ve seen bikes from Germany’s PG brand before, and the PG BlackBraid could be the German way to say “Black Beauty.” This ride features a full braided carbon fiber bike putting a new twist on the material. It is available as either an urban-commuter “Fixie” or as the road-ready “Touring.” It is available in any color you want, as long as its black. But really with a bike like this black will do.

In Tune

Tune-CupsWe’ve known those fans of titanium bicycles who take the love of the metal very seriously. Many companies have introduced consumer products out of the material as well, and Ti-lovers just can’t get enough. But now Tune is in tune with those who have a love of carbon fiber.

The company has introduced a line of Carbon Coffee Cups. At $240 a piece these are rather pricey, but given that carbon fiber will go the distance – and pretty much never wear out – these might be the last coffee cubs you ever have to buy. Apparently finding these might be the trick, as we’ve been searching high and low.

Personal Yacht

For those with rivers of gold the McLellan Jacobs – the America’s Cup boat builders – carbon fiber-hulled Kayak 1 might just be the best way to row downstream. It features teak and ash timber detailing that gives this kayak a true sense of style. Of course the owners won’t be able to take a guest for a spin in it, as it is a single person boat. But for those few who could likely afford it why would they really want to share the thrill.

Truly Lightweight Commuter Bike

There have been many attempts to create a lightweight commuter bike, but few have come close to Germany’s PG-Bikes BlackBraid Fixed. At just 11 pounds it is about as light as they come. This bike features a carbon fiber frame, belt drive and includes just a front brake.

One’s wallets might be a whole lot lighter to ride it however, as this bike reportedly costs around $20,000. Apparently you can put a price on less weight.

PreCycle Your Hockey Stick

We’ve noted the trend in materials being used in the construction of hockey sticks. Composites are being used more and more and the advantage for players is clear, but so is the cost. Likewise, composite materials have a problem in that these are not easily recycled.

HockeyGreen is one company that has stepped up to offer a solution before it is a problem. It actually offers buyers the opportunity to “precycle” their sticks. With each new stick sold through Total Hockey retail stores or website buyers will receive a free return shipping label and can earn a $10 coupon towards a new stick. This is a good way to keep the broken composite sticks out of a landfill, and more importantly can be used by HockeyGreen for research in how to capture and extract some of the materials. Composite Repair Coming to Hockey Sticks

A good hockey stick – especially one made of composite materials – isn’t cheap, and unfortunately it isn’t the sort of the thing that is treated with the utmost care and respect. It is in fact a tool that can be beat around pretty hard, and this in turn can get expensive when it breaks. One-piece composite sticks, made of layers of carbon fiber, can cost $300 or more, so not exactly cheap to replace.

But Randy Langille of Vancouver just sees this as an opportunity. He’s been repairing composite sticks since 2009 and now has 23 locations across Canada. His company Integral Hockey has adopted a process and special tools used in the manufacture of aerospace components to repair composite hockey sticks. Guru Goes Cannondale

Canadian custom bike maker Guru Bikes, which is known for its innovative DFU (Dynamic Fit Unit) for creating the perfect fit for riders looking to purchase a custom titanium or carbon fiber bike, could soon be part of the Cannondale family.

Does this mean that Cannondale will offer custom bicycles or just utilize the DFU system at some dealers? We’ll have to watch this one.

Eurobike Preview: Armor Up for the Trial

For those who go to the extreme on the off-road trails, Leatt will have you covered. The company is set to introduce a new line of protective clothing for 2013, which it will be showing at Eurobike later this month.

This will a new soft body that feature the company’s exclusive BraceOn Strap system that keeps the brace secure without the need for body straps. The 3DF is designed with three-dimensional impact foam used at common contact points, including shoulder, elbows, chest, back and hips. The foam reportedly can stay soft while riding, but hardens upon impact to disperse the force of the crash. At the same time it utilizes a moisture-wicking fabric to ensure that riders don’t get bogged down with sweat. Continue reading Eurobike Preview: Armor Up for the Trial
