Shine It Up

BixbyWho says they don’t make things like they used to in Detroit. The limited edition Bixby is the product of a collaboration between Shinola and Filson, and it is one that truly shines. It features a double-butted TrueTemper steel frame, painted Filson Green, along with a Shimano Nexus 3-speed hub and mech discs. While bamboo doesn’t grow in the Motor City it still makes for a nice material for the fenders, and goes nicely with the Portland Design Works rear rack.

This is one bike that proves there are still those that can make quality products in Detroit.

Made in America: Back to Nature

Nautral-LogGo old school with the Natural Log Skateboards, which are hand crafted in San Diego from either vertical grain bamboo or recycled oak with two internal layers of tri-axial fiberglass for added strength. An Entropy Resins Super Sap epoxy will provide protection for the deck and add some bounce.

While these look vintage these boards should endure the test of time.

Semester in Class

SemesterThe Semester is one classy looking bike and something that could be ridden to school or work. Currently the designers of the Semester Bicycle are looking to Kickstarter to get this thing rolling. The idea is to merge materials to create proprietary “Hextubes” that will make a unique design but provide strength and rigidity. Each tube is a structural stressed skin composite of bamboo and carbon fiber, that is covered with a durable glass/epoxy lamination.

The bamboo fibers run parallel along the length of the tube while the carbon fiber and FRP skins are laid at a 45 degree angle giving added rigidity while further protecting the bamboo. The rear triangle of the bike is made of powder coated steel. The idea is that no other bike will look like or ride like the Semester. Continue reading Semester in Class

Bamboo for the Masses

Bamboo-BeeThere have been numerous efforts to roll out a bicycle made of bamboo, but a new startup is looking to bring bamboo to the masses. Sunny Chuah has turned to Kickstarter to launch the Bamboo Bee, and produce low cost but durable bicycles.

Bamboo has numerous benefits, including the fact that it is sustainably produced, offers a natural dampening effect and is both strong and lightweight. Currently the Kickstarter campaign is focused on two models, the Revolution and Sunny. Could this Bee the future for bicycles? Video after the jump

Hybrid Bike

When we think hybrids we think of a bike that is a cross between something for the road and off-road, but Boo Bicycles had something very different in mind. The Aluboo, which was shown at the recent North American Handbuilt Bicycle Show (NAHBS) is an aluminum alloy and bamboo bicycle! The company has even launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring this thing out.

The rational for the choice of materials is that it provides the ride characteristics of bamboo at a much more attractive price. Boo yeah! Video after the jump

White Lightning Strikes With Bamboo

Bicycle cleaning supply maker has White Lightning strikes again with its new line of biodegradable wipes made of bamboo. We’ve seen the fast growing grass used in the construction of bicycle frames, and even for fabric. But the Bamboo Cycle Wipes, which are made from 100 percent bamboo natural fiber fabric, are reusable yet biodegradable and will completely decompose after 28 days in compost.

Bamboo Yacht(z)

We’ve seen bamboo used as a material of choice for a number of products and now Land Yachtz skateboards has jumped on board with its Bamboo Stout. This is one of the smaller bamboo decks the company offers, making it an easy one to carry around when it isn’t being ridden.

Of course the riding is what it is all about and the bamboo gives this a nice bounce, while the shorter wheel base makes it easy for quick turns. The deck’s artwork is by Jon Fox and is one that will certainly turn heads as well.

Das CAPiTA Snowboard

Bamboo is a great material as it is fast growing, sustainable and can be crafted into a seemingly endless amount of products. We’ve seen bamboo bikes, clothing made of bamboo ash and even a ski pole made of bamboo. But for the 2013 snowboarding season CAPiTA’s created the new DBX board that features an RFC sustainable bamboo dual core, which promise to offer softer flex making for an easy, forgiving rides in the powder.

And with its colorful graphics by Volcom Stone this one is sure to get attention! Video after the jump

Pole Position

Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on earth and while it is typically associated with hot tropical regions this grass actually can be found in diverse climates including mountain regions. Still it probably isn’t typically found on the ski slopes but Soul Poles is looking to change that.

We’ve seen bamboo used for bikes and canes and now Soul Poles is looking to take the sustainable material, which is also fairly low tech, and use it for ski poles. Bamboo actually features a high strength-to-weight ratio and is fairly flexible so it should be ideal for a ski pole. Continue reading Pole Position

Zuri Handcrafted Bamboo Bicycles

Bamboo as a material for bicycles isn’t really that new. There have been a few companies that have used the fast-growing, ultra-strong grass as a material choice for frame design. The latest is German-owned Zuri, which might seem as an odd choice as bamboo isn’t exactly native to the Rhine or Black Forrest.

However, the hand built bikes are actually produced in Africa from locally grown bamboo. The venture was started by David Hoffmann and Philipp Sayler of Munich, who set up shop in Zambia where the bamboo is harvested. The pair also look for bamboo that has real character and grain to give the bikes a nice sense of style. Continue reading Zuri Handcrafted Bamboo Bicycles

Bamboo Racks It Up

We’ve seen bamboo used for bicycle frames, and we’ve seen bamboo used for water bottles and even clothing. But the quick growing grass offers the strength of wood and has a nice look as well. This is why it is used for cabinets and even floors. So it is no surprise that Quarterre would create a bike rack made of bamboo as well.

The Branchline bike race is designed and made in England from FSC certified bamboo and hand-finished in leather. It offers a striking design with adjustable arms that can hold two bikes off the floor. About the only downsides of going with bamboo is that this isn’t the most affordable bike rack – and it will cost about $1500 – plus it will take about eight to 10 weeks to get it. But if you have the money and some patience, the Quarterre Branchline will be an ideal bike rack to show off those spiffy high-end road bikes.
