Clever Ski Pole
Winter is finally over – in fact it never arrived for much of the country – but that doesn’t mean it isn’t too early to think about next year. Actually it is Neva too early, as in Anthony Griesel’s Neva microprocessor-equipped ski poles that will bring “smart” technology to skiing and back wood snowshoeing and hiking.
Each pole features a waterproof grip with a mini-computer that can be linked via Bluetooth to an app on a user’s iPhone or Android device, and this could allow for flashes for incoming calls and even the ability to take calls without taking off the gloves. Other possibilities include text messages, and basic (but very useful data) such as temperature and elevation, as well as time. GPS could of course be a future possibility. Video after the jump
Pebble Smartwatch Gets First App
The most-funded Kickstarter project to date is the Pebble smartwatch, and it landed its first app partner this week – working-tracking app RunKeeper. Users will still have to wait until fall for the release, but when it arrives it will be able to interact with an iPhone or Android device, and with the RunKeeper app will provide data straight to the wrist. Users can take control of their handset, which can remain tucked away in a pocket or pack. Continue reading Pebble Smartwatch Gets First App

National Parks iPhone App Makes Parks Experience More Interactive
For years enthusiasts of the National Parks have brought their park passport book to all the monuments and parks around the nation. My sister was very into her passport for a while and collected stamps at many parks on a drive across the country. Now an iPhone app can work in tandem with your passport book to add even more fun to the preserved outdoors.
The app features information from the passport book. You can also use the app to view park maps, websites and other information on each National Park. When you’re at the park you can use the camera to record photos and video to be stored with the park on your app.

QT2 Systems Triathlon Calculator Predicts Finish Time in App
QT2 Systems has released an app for the iPhone and iPod Touch that works as a calculator to project an individual’s triathlon race performance. In turn, the app helps create personalized training ranges.
Race outcomes are based on seven key inputs from training. The tool then estimates race distance and course types. The app also gives you race pacing and training zone recommendations to get you to reach your goals.
“Triathletes put a great deal of time and focus into their race preparations, and should always be well aware of where they stand, with regard to their racing goals,” said Jesse Kropelnicki, founder and developer of QT2 Systems.
The app was developed in cooperation with Triessential.com to help convert proprietary algorithms developed over 10 years of coaching. The formulas were then worked into an iPhone app.
The QT2 Calculator is available on iTunes for the iPhoen and iPod Touch for $1.99.

From the High Tech To Low Tech – Roof Rack Reminders Can Help Protect the Bike
As our friends at BikeRadar.com noted last week “Roof rack reminders could save your bike,” because we either have done it or know someone who has done it – driving into the garage with the bike on the roof of the car. The result is never pretty for the garage, the car and especially the bike. As the spring riding season is coming up, US Editor Matt Pacocha offered a piece that looked at a range of products designed to remind those with bicycle roof-racks that the bike is up there.
