Happy Trailers to You

While gasoline prices have stabilized in the last month as the peak summer travel is now past us, bicycle cargo trailers are still increasing as riders look to bring along more stuff with them. And while bicycle commuting has also reportedly fallen this year, there is no denying that bike cargo trailer use is increasing.

“In today’s economic climate, people have started to realize that it just makes economic sense to ride a bike when possible, instead of spending money on gas and car maintenance,” say the experts at Bicycletrailers.com. “People want to save money – while also doing something that is good for the environment.” Continue reading Happy Trailers to You

Hands On: Honey Stinger Organic Stinger Waffle

This morning I got up and realized I had nothing for breakfast. Then I remembered the Honey Stinger Waffles I picked up at Interbike a few weeks ago. Problem Solved! Normally I don’t grab an energy bar unless I plan on a really hard workout. It’s got the protein, carbohydrates, fat and calories to feed you and get you going. But this waffle bar is a bit smaller and I figured , whether or not it’s true, it seems like an appropriate breakfast.

Even when I’m on a hard workout, I think about whether I need an energy bar, again because of all that comes with it. It’s a commitment. It’s saying “I am going to burn 1,000+ calories before I’m through.” It’s more than I need. Enter the Honey Stinger: Stinger waffle. I tried the strawberry flavor. It was yummy.

The bar is roughly three-inches in diameter. It’s very thin. It’s a wafer sandwich. Densely packed inside is a strawberry jelly. Though don’t expect to do the Oreo thing and separate them, it’s pretty solid. Stinger Waffles are light, sweet and you hardly believe you’re eating an energy bar. File this under strange tablet accessory – a holder for the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which allows the tablet computer to be tucked under the top tube. But look again, that isn’t a holder that attaches to the bike, because it is actually the bike itself.

Samsung is rolling out a branded bike that puts the tablet between your legs so you can take it on the go, making it the perfect accessory for the urban hipster. Continue reading Galaxy on the Go

Made in America: Aero Tech Designs

Descente, Bike Nashbar, Terry Precision, Head and Giant are familiar names in cycling apparel, but a name you may not be familiar with is Aero Tech Designs, Inc. of Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. For over 25 years these companies, along with many others, have contracted with Aero Tech Designs to design and manufacture cycling apparel – all happening from their facility in this Pittsburgh suburb.

Founded by Cathy Schnaubelt Rogers, an avid cyclist and former racer herself, Aero Tech Designs prides itself on not only producing cycling apparel in the U.S.A., but also sourcing all of the raw material from domestic suppliers. The 10mm Italian inspired chamois is American made; the fabric is knit domestically in South Carolina; the thread is from American company Efrid of North Carolina – even the paper labels are printed locally in a domestic paper facility. Materials are brought together and assembled in Coraopolis by American workers. The company then sells the goods under the Aero Tech Design name.

G-Form Goes Stealth with Padding

Some sports require protective gear. Said protective gear is often awkward due to its bulkiness, stiffness and other restraints from the movement of the sport at hand. Rhode Island-based G-Form has impact absorbing protection gear that goes on soft but turns stiff like armor when the pressure of an impact is experienced. Get GPS to Get Wet and More

Global Positioning Satellites, or more commonly GPS, have really changed our lives. Developed for the military, these evolved in use to provide driving directions. But in recent years these devices found a role in fitness and health, providing a way to track distance of sport watches and other workout equipment.

But even as Timex noted last year, GPS doesn’t work in all conditions, notably in space (not much of a health issue), indoors or worst of all underwater. This is why training watches aren’t quite ready for triathlons. But an assistant professor of engineering at the University of California, Riverside has received a three-year, $447,000 grant to develop techniques to navigate those areas where GPS doesn’t work. Toyota Tri’s Fitness Market With New App

Even if you aren’t competing in this weekend’s Toyota U.S. Open Triathlon you can follow the action with a new mobile app. Today Life Time Fitness, Inc. and Best Buy Mobile announced the release of the app that will allow friends, family and spectators to track individual triathletes through this Sunday’s events in Rockwall, Texas.

The app will give competitors and spectators information on key locations like Saturday’s Toyota U.S. Open Triathlon Sports and Fitness Expo, The Harbor swim start, transition information, and the Finish Festival at The Hilton Bella Harbor. Competitors can also review the event updates that have been sent out.

“Thanks to Best Buy Mobile, spectators, friends and family can follow their favorite triathlete’s progress during the race,” said race director Nick Lynch. “After downloading the app, touching the ‘tracking’ icon and entering a bib number, they’ll be able to see the location of their triathlete as he or she crosses certain checkpoints on race day.”

In addition to providing real-time participant splits and transition times powered by the RR:360 results engine, the mobile app also will provide event information related to the best locations to watch the race, course maps, and overall race results. The Toyota U.S. Open Triathlon app can be downloaded free for Android and iPhones smartphones. And those without smartphone access can still follow the action from a computer.

All 2011 Race to the Toyota Cup participant results and current point standings are available at racetothetoyotacup.com, the official website of the Race to the Toyota Cup.

Alabama Schools Employ Wii to Combat Childhood Obesity

Sales of Nintendo’s Wii are down and the popularity of the gaming console isn’t as explosive as a few years back (you can now actually find one in stock, and for much cheaper), but the Wii is still name-checked as the first successful console to bring fitness and video gaming together. The Wii Fit accessory and “game” can be found in millions of homes (albeit also collecting dust is many households), and it is frequently referenced in popular culture. Despite the success it has achieved to date in getting people off their sofas, the Wii Fit doesn’t actually deliver the level of intensity a traditional exercise provides.

Never mind all that. Public school officials in Alabama still see the Wii Fit system as a way to combat childhood obesity in the state. The “Wee Can Fight Obesity” program uses the Wii Fit Plus Bundle and EA Sports Active games as a form of exercise three days a week during phys-ed class for third graders. The one-year program is rolled out to 30 schools, and was in 30 different schools the previous year; the goal is to expand the program to every elementary school.

The program puts a different spin on what is exercising. The kids don’t view it as torture in school, but as playing. Children are exercising and shedding pounds without ever thinking of it as physical activity. While the Wii Fit will never offer the benefits of true exercising or activity, it does give kids a positive spin on the dreaded P.E. class. Importantly, the Alabama program recognizes the threat childhood obesity poses and is doing what it can to address the issue.
