Adidas Sprints to Barefoot Training Shoe for the Gym

While we hope not to see a bear market on Wall Street, the barefoot training shoe market is off and running. Adidas announced this week the launch of its new adipure Trainer, the first barefoot training shoe designed specifically for the gym. This shoe promotes pure and natural movement that can help strengthen muscles, build balance and promote dexterity.

“A lot of engineering went into making your foot a high performance machine,” said Mark Verstegen, founder of Athletes’ Performance. “To achieve your full potential during a workout, focus on how your foot interacts with the ground in the same way you think about how your hand interacts with a ball or a bat. Using your foot’s natural power and movement will help you strengthen muscles you never knew you had in your feet, lower legs and throughout your core.” Video after the jump

Hands On: Bollé Tempest with Modulator Lenses

Since the early 1990s, I have been an avid user of the Oakley Mumbo and M-frames with the Sweep lenses for all forms of cycling. They have protected my eyes from tree branches, sun, snow, mud, rocks, flying insects and anything else thrown my way. I never ride without them. They fit my head well and provide excellent coverage keeping the wind out of my eyes during fast descents. I have tried many other types of glasses and yet I keep grabbing my M-frames every time I ride… until now.

At Interbike this year, there were numerous eyewear companies and a number showing off photochromic lenses. Photochromic lenses darken when exposed to ultraviolet rays (UV) and fade back to lighter tint in low light areas or indoors. Shortly after the show, I received a pair of the Bollé Tempest glasses with their version of a photochromic lens, the Modulator, to try myself.

Hit the Traill for Winter

Winter riding means bundling up and that begins with a solid base layer. While it might sound like all you need is a heavy sweat shirt that could result in you overheating, then sweating and then getting chilled when you reduce your effort. The key to a good base layer is one that won’t make you too warm but won’t leave you cold either.

The Nalini Traill is just the sort of fitness under garment that will help keep you warm and dry. The jersey features a variable knit technology, with sections allowing for ventilation so you don’t get too heated up, while other sections will still keep your body warm. The long sleeved jersey is made of Meryl Actisystem so that it is lightweight, snug and warming. And while it is very tight fitting jersey it has enough give so that you don’t feel like you’re being compressed by it. It is the sort of base layer that will let you put in your ride and return to home base feeling warm and dry even in the dead of winter.

LED Lite Up the Night For Biking

Riding a bike at night has numerous hazards, namely that fact that drivers can’t see them. But now a start up from Utah father and son team Rick and Brandon Smith might add some light to the night. LED by Lite essentially consists of four strips of silicone-encased LED bulbs, where two mount to the front fork and two to the rear. Following the tradition of car lights it is meant for white in the front and red in the back, but unlike car lights these can be seen from 360 degrees.

All four strips are waterproof and are designed to be removed and reinstalled in just seconds thanks to the QAD (Quickly Attaching and Detaching) System. The lights are powered by a BlackBox12-volt lithium-ion battery pack, which can be charged with a wall adapter or from a computer via a micro USB cord.

Nike on the Seitiro Hi-Vis Ball

While American’s expect a football to be shaped like… well, a football, the rest of the world knows football as the game played with the round ball. It might not seem like there is much that can be done to the football/soccer ball, but actually Nike begs to differ and its new ball could be the biggest game changer since the introduction of the now legendary white footballs, which were introduced in 1951 to help spectators see the ball during night matches.

Introducing the Nike Seitrio Hi-Vis ball, which builds on the legacy of excellence in the T90 football range that has served as the official match ball in the world’s leading leagues including Barclay’s English Premier League, Italy’s Serie A and Spain’s La Liga. Continuing to bring new innovations to football, the Hi-Vis ball features Nike RaDaR technology, which means Rapid Decision and Response.

Nike has tested the ball in the lab and on the field and the result is the Nike RaDaR technology, which makes it easier for players to see the ball better and capitalize on split second scoring and passing opportunities. In the game of football, precision sight is of utmost importance, and the Nike Seitiro is engineered to stand out on pitch even when conditions are not ideal. The yellow and purple color combination flaunts additional fluorescence and brighteners, making it even more visible in low light conditions than previous generations of Hi-Vis balls.

The Nike Seitiro features patented hi-vis casing, performance graphic, and unique five-layer construction, along with aerodynamic stability. The new ball saw its official debut on the pitch this past weekend. Chances are we’ll be seeing a lot more of it.

WingmanHD Video Camera Catches the Action

Athletes are capturing some amazing video. Biking on the trails; catching waves; skating some big tricks. Capturing the action while in motion, rather than filming when a friend rides by from a stationary position, adds to the authenticity of the video. It also requires some specialized equipment. That doesn’t mean, however, that you need to spend a lot of money, or have a film degree, to pull off some amazing video.

Delkin Devices just released the WingmanHD, a waterproof, 3-ounce action camera. The company claims the HD camera capable of shooting 1080p video is the lightest on the market at 3-ounces. The comparable Contour HD helmet camera weighs 4.3 ounces, as listed on Amazon.com. The weight for the newly released GoPro HD Hero2 camera was difficult to find.

The WingmanHD is powerful with a 1.5-inch LCD screen; 3x digital zoom and universal mounting system. The screen allows you to view what the action (if the camera is positioned where you can see it) and also has a playback mode so you can review video even before you get back to your computer. The camera comes with an 8 GB MicroSD Memory Card, rechargeable battery that provides 2.5 hours of recording time, a helmet mount, vented helmet mount, bar mount, wall and auto charger, a pwer and data USB cable, component cable, wrist strap and user guide.
