Bern Rolls Out Winter Commuter Helmet

Winter is coming, and for bicycle commuters that means either having cold ears or trying to fit a cap under a typical cycling helmet. But Bern has another solution, as noted by our friends at BikeRadar. At Interbike, while it was still warm and mostly sunny, the helmet maker showed off its line of winter-friendly brain buckets, which are now available.

The men’s G2 and women’s Cougar 2 feature Bern’s Zip Mold in-mould construction process that includes a detachable soft-peaked liner. The helmet features three-position air vent slider on top as well, so on a warm day the vents can be left open so the wearer doesn’t get too heated, but on the colder/wetter days the vents can be closed up. These weren’t actually developed with cyclists in mind, and were actually first used on the slopes – so whether it is for snowboarding or cycling through the winter these will keep the head warm! And while we’d like to think that this could prevent brain freeze but that’s not something effected by weather! Continue reading Bern Rolls Out Winter Commuter Helmet

So what is the secret to The North Face’s new coats that offer the promise of excellent warmth-to-weight ratio? Fuzzy balls it seems! This will come as good news to the geese that supply the goose down for coats. Continue reading Fuzzy Balls In ThermoBall Jacket

Nike Golf Offers Women Cart Bags

Women golfers have a new bag to consider, and it has been designed in unity with the colors and styles of Nike Golf women’s footwear and apparel for those looking to be coordinated from head to toe. Nike Golf has announced the release of two new golf bags to its successful Nike Brassie II Cart bag collection for women in 2012. Each Brassie II cart bag incorporates key features and benefits for the female golfer who often uses a trolley or power cart.

For maximum organization, the Nike Brassie II Cart bag features a 9-inch, 10-way oval top that is fur lined and includes “stadium seating” for clubs. Stadium seating is a simple configuration that provides easy visibility when making club selections for each shot. An integrated external putter well and glove patch guarantees quick and convenient access.

The bag features nine functional pockets, seven of which are zippered, and of the nine pockets there is a large insulated cooler pocket to keep drinks and food cool during a round.  The Nike Brassie II also comes with two functionally designed matching accessory pouches.  The pouches can either be clipped onto the outside of the bag or placed in one of the nine pockets of the golf bag.

For women who prefer bright colors, there’s the Nike Brassie II Cart bag (Swan) that carries a vivid argyle pattern in hues of pink and lavender with a classy touch of grey, and for those who prefer more of an understated look, there is a grey plaid (Sail) version as well. To complete the Brassie II Collection, Nike Golf also has designed an array of accessories for women that match up with each of the Brassie II Cart bags, including the Nike Day bag, Nike Bucket bag and the Nike Tote bag.

Made in America: Strength Squared Power Sleds

Typically sleds are designed to make hauling a heavy load over a set distance a little bit easier. Whether that load is a deer dragged out of the woods by a hunter, a kid’s sled barreling down a hill or Santa’s sled landing on a roof, the goal of moving a body of mass over a surface with ease is the same. But there are a few sleds made with the opposite goal in mind – making the task of moving a body of mass harder. These ‘power sleds’ are used in fitness training to build strength and stamina. Strength Squared, with locations in both Las Vegas, NV and Denver, CO, has only been making power sleds since 2010, but they have made a big splash in the market with an appearance on the NBC show, “The Biggest Loser” earlier this year.

New Speedo Suit for Michael Phelps

This week Michael Phelps unveiled the Fastskin3,the new high-tech swimsuit that the Olympic champion plans to wear in next year’s games in London. While the Speedo LZR Racer, which he previously used and were used in all but two of the 25 broken record events at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, the new suits are reportedly already looking to be record breakers.

The full body high-tech suits were banned in 2009 following the World Aquatics Championships, which saw 43 more records broken, so these new designs cover less of the body, but do incorporate a cap, goggles and suit. Speedo suggests that swimmers using the suit can gain an extra 11 percent in oxygen economy, reduce skin friction drag by 2.7 percent and full body drag force by 5.7 percent from this new system, resulting in stronger performances. For those who want to use the tablet but don’t to see it succumb to a mishap, Scosche Industries has released the fitRAIL, an exercise mount frame for the iPad/iPad 2 that securely holds onto the tablet while also clamped onto the exercise machine. Paralyzed cyclist is ‘cured’ by bike crash and now she hopes to take part in the Olympics

The headline above is really hard to believe. Monique van der Vorst was paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair for 13 years. She had taken up hand cycling after a routine ankle operation paralyzed one leg. While riding her hand cycle she was struck by a car, and became completely paralyzed from the waist down. Then a collision with a cyclist cured her. Her remarkable story is detailed in an article in The Daily Mail.

Taking Sledding to the Next Level

Earlier this week we noted that there was the new Bean Bag Sled, which made for more comfortable runs down the hill. On the exact opposite end of the spectrum there is the Slegoon, which won first prize in the UK IOM3 Design Innovation in Plastics competition back in 2003. Now the new heavy duty sleds, which sort of evoke Mad Max on snow, have evolved into serious competition where full contact between the vehicles during a downhill run is not only part of the race but strongly encouraged. We wouldn’t be to be on a bean bag when these things come at us! Continue reading Taking Sledding to the Next Level
