E.M.I.L.Y. Watches the Beach

While this isn’t quite what most people have in mind with a lifeguard name Emily (above) that’s because E.M.I.LY. is actually a robot lifeguard that can be deployed on beaches to aid human lifeguards.

Designed by Hydronalix, the Emergency Integrated Lifesaving Lanyard will be making the rounds this summer, where it can be used as a tool that can be deployed at 25 miles per hour – so much quicker than even the Bay Watch crew could likely swim. E.M.I.LY. works as a floatation system for those in trouble while they wait for the real life human life guards to arrive.

First Impressions: Polar RCX5 Tour de France GPS

This week we received the Polar RCX5 Tour de France GPS heart rate monitor, the “Official Tour de France Training Computer.” The box pretty much sums up our immediate first impressions, “Yellow is Everything.” Unlike other heart rate watches this one doesn’t try to go low key – it goes straight for yellow.

While it will likely take a lot more than the RCX5 on your wrist to get in yellow, it certainly could help you train better. Over the years we’ve tested a fair share of heart rate monitors and this one is also more than just clock, calorie counter and pulse meter in a flashy package. BMW Motion Tracking Helping Swimmers

When we think of BMW we don’t think of the Olympics and we certainly don’t think about swimming – in fact the only time we even think of German cars and water is that scene in Risky Business where Tom Cruise goes deep with the Porsche.

But now BMW, which has in the past aided long jumpers, is getting all wet helping USA Swimming prepare for the Olympics. So how is the company involved? According to the press release:

This latest effort will provide quantitative analysis of swimmers’ starts and turns – critical to success in the sport – via a unique motion tracking system. This technology initiative is central to BMW’s comprehensive U.S. Olympic program which endeavors to advance the performance goals of Team USA while bringing communities across the country closer to the excitement of the Olympic Games. Take a Breath With Powerbreather

While many may take like fish to a water the truth is that water has a tendency to make it hard to breathe. But the Powerbreather is an advanced breathing system that is designed for both beginners and advanced swimmers, decreasing apprehension while allowing for greater focus in the water. This innovative snorkel works with an air intake valve on the back of the head, which offers a constant flow of fresh air – and allows the wearer to breathe naturally without turning the head. The device, which can be adjusted for almost all sized heads, is designed to keep water out while the air flows in. it probably won’t be allowed in competition, but it can let users swim like fishes the rest of the time. Hands On: UVSunSense Monitoring Wristband

With summer approaching, we’re looking to ways to cover up and protect our skin from the harmful rays as much as we’re looking forward to spending some time in the sun. One product that helps us gauge how long we’ve been in the sun, and tells us when we’re at risk, is UVSunSense Monitoring Bands. These bands are plastic strips you put on like a bracelet, and apply sunscreen to when you apply to your skin. This strip then works as a timer to let you know when to reapply, and simply when you’ve had enough time in the sun. Continue reading Hands On: UVSunSense Monitoring Wristband

Keystone ECO MarineCase Lets You Bring Your iPhone Into the Water

Judging from all the “rugged” cases for portable electronics we have covered, we are going to confirm (unscientifically) there’s a really big market for people who want to take their smart phones and music players into the water or any place that is electronics unfriendly. The latest such product for the iPhone 4/4S is the Keystone ECO MarineCase from Concord Keystone, a fully submersible case – up to 20 feet – that lets you shoot video, take photos, send e-mail, or perform any smart phone-related activity while under water. It also protects against other elements like dust and sand, and is IP58 certified for dustproof and waterproof.

Check out this video shot with an iPhone encased in the MarineCase. Continue reading Keystone ECO MarineCase Lets You Bring Your iPhone Into the Water

QT2 Systems Triathlon Calculator Predicts Finish Time in App

QT2 Systems has released an app for the iPhone and iPod Touch that works as a calculator to project an individual’s triathlon race performance. In turn, the app helps create personalized training ranges.

Race outcomes are based on seven key inputs from training. The tool then estimates race distance and course types. The app also gives you race pacing and training zone recommendations to get you to reach your goals.

“Triathletes put a great deal of time and focus into their race preparations, and should always be well aware of where they stand, with regard to their racing goals,” said Jesse Kropelnicki, founder and developer of QT2 Systems.

The app was developed in cooperation with Triessential.com to help convert proprietary algorithms developed over 10 years of coaching. The formulas were then worked into an iPhone app.

The QT2 Calculator is available on iTunes for the iPhoen and iPod Touch for $1.99.

FINIS Hydro Tracker GPS Helps Open-Water Swimmers Track Location, Progress

When you’re in a pool, swimming from point A to B is a no-brainer. Out in open water, however, tracking your performance and location is a bit more difficult. The new Hydro Tracker GPS from FINIS is a fitness device designed for open water swimmers that tracks, maps, and records performance.

“We created the Hydro Tracker GPS to meet the needs of open water swimmers and fitness enthusiasts,” says John Mix, President of FINIS. “Our Hydro Tracker GPS and free Streamline Log allows swimmers to dig deeper into their key workout stats, providing them with invaluable ongoing feedback. This new GPS system will help maximize anyone’s results.”

The Hydro Tracker GPS can be attached to goggle straps or an included neoprene armband, and doesn’t require GPS calibration. It tracks the swimmer’s course and important, in-depth performance data, which users can review after their swim. Using the free online FINIS Streamline Training Log, “swimmers can set goals and analyze stats including splits, speed, distance, accumulated time, and elevation,” according to FINIS. Data can be shared via CSV or Google Earth files, or through Facebook and Twitter. The device can also be used for other sports, too, such as running, walking, biking, skiing, hiking, etc.

The device sells for $130, available now. Check out FINIS’s website for additional specs.

Pyle Introduces Line of Underwater Snorkeling Watches

Audio equipment manufacturer Pyle announced a new watch designed for snorkeling and water sports in its Pyle Sports outdoor recreational sports line of products. The water-resistant Snorkeling Master Watch can dive up to 330 feet, and it can record and store data (up to 100) in its dive log, which contains information like time and date, dive duration, maximum dive depth, minimum water, temperature, and dive site indication. The watch has six function modes: current time, chronograph, countdown timer, dual time mode, dive mode, and dive recall mode, which Pyle says helps “underwater users keep track of important information during their snorkeling adventures.” A built-in dive alarm activates when the user is emerging faster than 6 meters per minute, and a thermometer measures temperature from 14 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. When it gets dark underwater, the electro-luminescent backlight helps keep the watch readable. The Snorkeling Master Watch will cost $100 and come in black, green, orange, and red.

Heart Rate Teller

How important is information to an athlete? Today knowing details like heart rate and recovery during training can make all the difference in performance when it comes time to compete. Runners have long been told not to turn their heads as they break stride, but given the vast amount of information on the wrist it is sometimes worth taking the eyes off the course to keep the eyes on the prize.

Cyclists meanwhile compete with all sorts of information including heart rate, power output, distance traveled and much more on handlebar mounted devices. But swimmers are pretty much left in the deep end when it comes to getting the most basic information. That is about to change as the Swimmer’s Talking Heart Rate Monitor can provide that heart rate through audible cues. Additional images
