Interactive Racquet

There are more and more devices that are helping track an athlete’s performance during training or competition. The Babolat Play & Connect interactive tennis racquet could help players avoid faults altogether. The racquet looks just like any other out there, but in the handle are sensors and electronics that can track performance. This can be downloaded afterward via USB or even streamed line via a wireless connection to a computer, tablet or smartphone for tracking of activity in real time.

This is reportedly the first time that MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology has been built-in a tennis racquet, but something tells us this won’t be the last. And while this information could be used to help train, it can also be used by those watching the game as well. A prototype was shown off at the French Open, where the audience could get stats on shot type, power and consistency in real time. Video after the jump

Motion Capture Suit Helps Athletes Train

Motion capture technology has been used in the creation of movies and video games, and even used by athletes to identify problems with their technique. However, it typically requires athletes to go to a studio or environment designed for motion capture not training. Moreover athletes can only see the results afterwards. But a new suit might give athletes on the fly feedback during training. Researchers at Birmingham City University have developed a wearable device called the “Vibrating Suit,” which can be worn just about anywhere, and more importantly can provide feedback in real time. MLS Offers Real-Time Performance Tracking

While it is possible to watch how athletes are performing during a sporting match, adidas and Major League Soccer are taking it to the next level. And while coaches essentially “guess” from what they can see, and what the players say, micoach professional soccer team tracking system provides coaches with real time performance metrics on the field of play including player position, power output, speed, distance covered, intensity of play, acceleration and GPS heat mapping.

This technology will see its debut during the 2012 AT&T MLS All-Star Game on July 25 in Philadelphia, which promises to be the world’s first “smart soccer match” and will feature the new micoach professional soccer team tracking system. Continue reading MLS Offers Real-Time Performance Tracking

Treadmill Marathoner Looks to Set Record

There is the loneliness of the long distance runner, but those looking to run a marathon can at least take in 26.2 miles of scenery. And then there is the loneliness of the long distance runner who runs on a treadmill.

As Competitor noted, marathoners Michael Wardian and Kim Duclos are attempting to set new world records for the fastest treadmill marathon at the John Hancock Sports and Fitness Expo on Boston Marathon weekend, April 14 and 15. They will do so using Virtual Runner Software technology from Outside Interactive. The reason is simple too reports Competitor: “Because of its point-to-point net downhill layout, the fabled 26.2-mile course that runs from Hopkinton to Boston will never be home to the marathon world record, but that doesn’t mean Boston will forever be excluded from the running record books.” Continue reading Treadmill Marathoner Looks to Set Record
