Encapsilating Jacket

While Patagonia’s new DriDown jacket may not be encapsulating, it is Encapsil’ating. The Encapsil Down Bedlay Parka features an incredible 1,000-fill insulation rating, but more impressively is water resistant, stronger and 25 percent loftier than other down. The jacket further features the industry’s first 100 percent independently baffled, differentially cut parka design to further eliminate cold spots.

This jacket can stand up to the cold with a polyurethane dry coated 100 percent shell with helmet-compatible hood and insulated hand warmer pockets. There is even a unique pull-system that lets wears adjust the waist draw cord from inside or out of the jacket. This is one jacket that will let you get down – and stay truly encapsil-ated in.

Airbag for Olympics

Lindsay Vonn’s recent crash shows the dangerous of racing down the ski slopes. While riders are increasingly donning helmets some companies are looking at how airbags could help reduce injuries. These include French-based Helite, which offers a wearable airbag system that includes accelerometers and sensors to detect when a skier is falling and automatically inflates, covering the skiers in a protective vest.

Helite hopes to have the technology deployed in time that it could actually be deployed by racers at next year’s Olympic Games. Continue reading Airbag for Olympics

The North Face’s Specialty Move

The North Face has long been known for its quality outdoor products, and the company has built quite a name with its brand. However, as Skiing Business reports the company, which has seemed to stray from its core business, is launching its new Steep Series, which will only be sold in specialty stores as the brand looks to commit and reconnect with its core users. This means the new line of outdoor apparel will be in specialty retailers rather than chain stores. Continue reading The North Face’s Specialty Move

Taking Kontrol

Beginning snowboarders often worry about how they’ll stop, but now Streetboardz Boarder Kontrol offers a solution with a special “brake” designed to crave into the snow. It features a curve on the metal blade to help riders learn to carve and turn while slowing down as well. The only downside to this system is that it does require a modification to the actual snowboard. For that reason the company is focused on supplying the hardware to schools and rental shops rather than bringing it to retail. Video after the jump

Run in the Sun

From Men’s Health: Why You Should Move Your Workout Outdoors
Winter blues are reason enough to seek out the sun. But here’s another: People with adequate levels of vitamin D—produced when your skin is exposed to the sun’s rays—have about half the risk of developing type 1 diabetes, according to a new study in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Customized Sledges

A consortium led by Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials is looking at creating custom-optimized ski sledges for use by the competitors in the cross-country and biathlon skiers competing in the 2014 Winter Paralympics. This could involve filming the competitors as they go through their racing motions on a standard sledge, and where the data is utilized to create a bio-mechanical model of the athlete to create a customized sledge. Will this give certain athletes an edge? Perhaps, but it could also just increase the spirit of competition.

SIA Recap: iProbe Rescue System

No there isn’t an app yet (that we know of anyway) for avalanche rescue, but the iProbe isn’t an iPhone accessory. It is actually a sensor-equipped probe and transmitter.. The iProbe ONE from Pieps features a sensor in the tip that can emit an audible signal in the handle when it gets within two meters of a buried transponder. It operates on the EN300718 standard signal for emergencies.

This could help rescuers narrow down where to dig, which can be crucial when it comes to finding trapped skiers or hikers.

Fatbike Summit Talks Snow Riding

Last month saw the second annual Fatbike Summit where land managers and bike advocates talked about banding together in an effort to promote the sport of winter cycling. In recent years mountain bikers have been increasingly hitting the trails and unfortunately this has resulted in some concerns over trail usage. But the recent summit ensured that the trails can be shared by skiers, bikers and even those on snowmobiles.

“We hit one out of the park,” said Gary Sjoquist, advocacy director for distributor QBP, a major supporter of the event. “Our Friday session was attended by about 40 land managers and included folks from Yellowstone (National Park) and various U.S. Forest units. They all got to ride fat bikes and learned how minimal their impacts are to groomed Nordic ski and snowmobile trails.” Continue reading Fatbike Summit Talks Snow Riding
