Screwy Idea

Propul~surfThe electric bike trend continues, and electric assisted bikes are being touted as a way to help make climbs easier for those on two wheels. Now a similar electrical concept is catching on for snowboards.

This is where the Propul~surf comes in. It basically takes the Archimedes design of a screw to create forward momentum. This concept was used for centuries to raise water and apparently it could help snowboarders get up a hill as well. We of course though that was what the ski lift was for! Video after the jump

Snowboard Sales

Snowboard

From Transworld Business: Snowboard Sales Hit Three-Year High In February; Inventories Drop
While snowboard industry season-to-date sales are still down, brighter days appear to be on the horizon thanks to a healthy dose of late-season snow across the country. February saw a 12% uptick in snowboard gear sales from last year and inventory and carryover sales both shrank, leading to a positive outlook for next season. Triple Protection

Trilogy-HelmetThose who partake in multiple sports know that the same equipment doesn’t always cross over, but the new Cébé Trilogy helmet might just live up to its name. This helmet doesn’t actually offer triple the protection, but it can provide protection for three sports. It was designed to meet European standards for mountain biking (CEN 1078), skiing (CEN 1077) and mountaineering (CEN 12492).

Since a winter helmet isn’t the same as a summer helmet, the Trilogy’s modular design allows it to adjust as the season’s chance. A visor can be added for summertime mountain cycling, while ear pads and vent plugs can be used when skiing or snowboarding, and with a few change outs be ready for anything in between.

Raised in America: Voormi Fall 2013 Collection

While backcountry wool wear from Voormi’s fall 2013 line is made in America, we’d also like to point out that the wool was also sourced in America. Voormi worked with Rocky Mountain Highcountry Merino exclusively to source the wool for its line of Precision Blended baselayers and midlayers. ColdAvenger – Not a Super Hero

While the look is reminiscent of Batman nemesis Bane – were the muscle bound hero going out in the winter – this is actually the ColdAvenger Balaclava. That too might sound like a super hero of sorts but in fact is a mask that can be used in true Arctic conditions.

It allows cold air to be mixed with warm air in the ventilator, making it easier to breathe when the air is so utterly cold. While most of us will never require such an apparatus, for those who do trek to truly cold regions it can make breathing a little easier. But for now it has us longing for spring just thinking about it.

Dam Crowded

From BikeRadar: Too many bikes in Amsterdam?
Are there too many bikes in Amsterdam? Not enough spaces to park them, narrow lanes clogged with swelling ranks of cyclists and a growing tension with moped drivers have raised an interesting problem for the city famed for its love of the bike. Epic Competition For Billboards

From swords to plowshares used to be the old saying, but in the 21st century it could be from billboards to bags. We reported back in November that Mat Dusting of Kingston St. Mary in the U.K. had started a business turning old truck tarpaulins into ski and snowboard bags, while California based Rareform was turning vinyl from billboards into surfboard cases.

Perhaps Epicstoke liked what it heard – and who can blame them. The start-up is now taking billboards and creating ski bags in Minnesota. They are also making wallets, bags, backpacks and even surfboard bags – so Rareform watch out as you might have some competition. In other words all those eyesores on the highway could soon be seen on the slopes and on backs – but in a much less eyesore kind of way! This is something to get stoked about, dare we say epic stoked?

Print and Go

httpv://youtu.be/DIRyxzMWvkA

We knew 3D printing was going to change the world. We’ve seen 3D printed as a concept technology for shoes and even bike parts, but the gang at Signal Snowboards printed up a board. David Lee and the gang from Every Third Thursday used the latest in CAD drawing technology and a carbon-based powder to print up a board ready for the slopes.

Made in America: Dead Trees to Usable Skis

Around since 2009 Meier Handmade Skis makes – as the name suggests – handmade skis. The Colorado-based company also is looking to take what might otherwise be unusable and is finding a use for it. The company is now sourcing wood from pine trees that have succumbed to beetles.

The proliferation of beetles has killed millions of acres of trees in Colorado, but companies such as Meier have managed to find a use for the wood. The result is a quality ski with a wooden core and at the same time it has found a use would the dead trees.

Ski Bag

Carrying skis and snowboards isn’t exactly something people enjoy doing, but unfortunately these items have to go where the snow is and often times there is still a hike from the cabin or car. The Function Ultralight Ski & Snowboard Carry System weighs in at just 84 grams but provides Mil-spec Nylon webbing, with Hypalon edge protection to make carrying the winter gear a whole lot easier.

It can be used in backpack configuration for a snowboard or set up as a bandolier for skis. And when you’re actually on the slopes on the skis/board this pack is small enough that you won’t regret having it along for the run.

Climbing Tower

From GearJunkie: Industrial Wasteland Transformed into Climbing Paradise (in Buffalo, NY)
Buffalo, New York, isn’t a climbing hot spot, but it appears that could be about to change. A project dubbed Silo City Rocks is renovating a 100-year-old grain elevator on the Buffalo River into one of the largest and most unique climbing facilities in North America. Minimal Snowshoes

Snowshoes can make it easy to walk in deep snow, but can also be stiff and uncomfortable. French snowshoe maker TSL Outdoor is looking to find a solution that provides the stability of snowshoes with some flexibility. The result is the Symbioz, which are slimmer and more flexible. These feature a series of spikes on the underside of the shoes to provide extra points of contact on uneven terrain, while the sidehill grip further bends with the contours of the terrain.

The idea is that these shoes provide a “symbiosis with nature,” providing a “barefoot” snowshoe. While we wouldn’t recommend actually going barefoot in the snow, we can see that TSL might be on to becoming one with the snow through the Symboiz.
