Europcar Rides in Carbon Ion Jersey

The Tour de France is underway and while it doesn’t appear likely that Thomas Voeckler will be able to see himself back in the yellow jersey as he did last year, he should at least be very comfortable in his Team Europcar Professional Cycling Team kit made by Louis Garneau.

It is features coldblack Carbon Ion, which reflects heat and helps cool the rider. And while the team wears green and black the fabric can cool riders as effectively as if the clothing was white. The coldblack treatment further offers increased UV protection, which is good for anyone who is going to be out on the road for five or six hours a day.

This works by utilizing embedded carbon fibers, which also help to reduce the overall weight of the jersey, and prevent electric charges from settling on the body, thus avoiding a negative reaction on muscular contractility. The carbon fibers also accelerate the movement of humidity through evaporation.

And this jersey might help Voeckler make up lost time as well, as it is the first to feature Speedtech fabric, which has a dimpled mesh construction that reduces aerodynamic drag and is designed to improve aerodynamics for speeds ranging from 15 to 45 mph. On the roads of France this clothing should have the team looking and feeling good.

Military Kids Grant Sends Gymnast to the Olympics

Photo: John Cheng for USA Gymnastics

One Olympic athlete got athlete got help from a military organization while training for the gymnastics competition. Gymnast Gabrielle Douglas, the daughter of a deployed soldier, got grants from Our Military Kids, a program that provides grants for children’s participation in activities such as sports, fine arts and tutoring. The program aims to help children, and families, cope with difficulties of deployment.

We’re not sure the military expected one of the kids in the program to go to the Olympics, but that’s what sixteen-year-old Gabrielle Douglas was able to do with her grants.

“Gymnastics is an expensive sport, and the grant from Our Military Kids was a financial blessing,” said Gabby’s mother Natalie Hawkins. “Gabby had just entered into elite gymnastics, and this camp gave her the opportunity to train with gymnasts on the U.S. team.”

The family received a $500 grant that made the difference.

“When I received the grant, I was so honored and happy,” Gabby said. “I know I speak for all military kids when I say thank you for making this fund available to help us pursue our dreams!”

To date, Our Military Kids has awarded 38,000 grants totaling more than $15 million.

Congratulations to Gabby Douglas on finding and using the resources at hand to achieve your dreams. We look forward to seeing her compete in London in a few weeks.

Name Games: Slipstream Sports and Garmin Joined by Sharp

Title sponsors are big business in the world of sports, and this is very apparent in the world of professional cycling. This week Slipstream Sports, which had been competing in professional cycling races including the Tour de France as Gamrin-Barracuda will become Garmin Sharp.

While Barracuda Networks will continue as an important co-title sponsor, and team materials as well as the website will refer to the team as Gamrin-Sharp-Barracuda, the official UCI-registered name of the team will be Garmin-Sharp (GRS).

TV and electronics maker Sharp is celebrating its 100 years in 2012 so we see this as a fitting way to draw some international attention. Continue reading Name Games: Slipstream Sports and Garmin Joined by Sharp

Interactive Racquet

There are more and more devices that are helping track an athlete’s performance during training or competition. The Babolat Play & Connect interactive tennis racquet could help players avoid faults altogether. The racquet looks just like any other out there, but in the handle are sensors and electronics that can track performance. This can be downloaded afterward via USB or even streamed line via a wireless connection to a computer, tablet or smartphone for tracking of activity in real time.

This is reportedly the first time that MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology has been built-in a tennis racquet, but something tells us this won’t be the last. And while this information could be used to help train, it can also be used by those watching the game as well. A prototype was shown off at the French Open, where the audience could get stats on shot type, power and consistency in real time. Video after the jump

Exergy Tour Tracker App for Women’s Cycling Race

In cycling, women don’t get a ton of recognition. Few races are broadcast on TV, and there aren’t quite as many teams worldwide as there are for men’s cycling. Even if you the Exergy Tour cycling stage race going on this week throughout Southwestern Idaho won’t be broadcast near you, you can track the progress of female cyclists on the inaugural tour with the Exergy Tour Tracker app, available for iPhone, iPad and Android.

The app will provide live coverage of the women’s cycling race in Idaho.

“The unique ability to bring the inaugural Exergy Tour to a world-wide audience through Tour Tracker and its innovative mobile video platform speaks to Exergy’s vision to further engage corporate sponsors, media, spectators, athletes and fans,” said Heather Hill, marketing, communications and events director for the Exergy Tour, in a corporate statement.

“On site during the event, spectators will also be able to watch the live Tour Tracker video simulcast on the big screens – allowing fans to watch start-to-finish coverage every day of the Tour whether they are at work, out and about, on the course or at the finish line.”

Prior to the start of the race we loaded the Tour Tracker app. It lists participating teams but doesn’t yet have profiles on each of the riders. We like the “Cycling 101″ section under Extras, which explains cycling terms such as a tour, stage, time trial, neutral start, finish line, general classification, peloton, domestique and other terms commonly used in professional cycling.

3T Stem Integrates Cycle-computer

As efforts are made to streamline every last part of a bike something has seemed a bit odd – namely those cycle-computer mounts that sort of ruin the sleek lines and look a bit like a tumor on the handlebars. But last season 3T introduced an integrated steam – fittingly called the Integra. Now comes word that the stem will be used this season by the Team Garmin-Barracuda in this season’s pro cycling races. Continue reading 3T Stem Integrates Cycle-computer

Virginia Tech Releases 2012 Football Helmet Ratings

Last year Virginia Tech – Wake Forest School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences began testing adult football helmets. The school just released its 2012 ratings, and added two helmets with five-out-of-five stars, joining last year’s pick.

Testing the helmets is a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded project. The test uses the STAR Evaluation System, which is an acronym for the Summation of Tests for the Analysis of Risk. It involves performing 120 impacts on each helmet model at multiple locations and impact energies to evaluate the degree of head protection.

The Riddell Revolution Speed earned five stars last year. This year the Rawlings Quantum Plus and Riddell 360 also earned five stars. The Rawlings implus and Rawlings Quantum each earned four stars, which still falls in the recommended category for Virginia Tech. Continue reading Virginia Tech Releases 2012 Football Helmet Ratings
