What are the Olympics Missing?

Several news stories are making the rounds this week following the successful 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. The question this week is “what events are missing?”

Golf will make a return to the Olympics in Rio in 2012, and will be joined by rugby. Some online sites have noted a short list of events that would be welcome and include: Cricket, a game popular not only the U.K., but also in much of the former British Empire and Commonwealth; Baseball, which is of course as American as Cricket is English; Softball, which was a sport that was only recently removed from the games; Mixed Martial Arts, which seems like a stretch but is a growing sport worldwide; and the surreal Roller Derby, which could be another popular sport for women athletes. Motion Capture Provides Insight into Olympic Swimmer Techniques

httpv://youtu.be/lDG2_K9N2ac

Under the water, it can be difficult to see every kick and every stroke a swimmer makes. But Manhattan Mocap did just that with Olympic swimmer Dana Vollmer to analyze her butterfly stroke and underwater dolphin kick.

Manhattan Mocap worked together with the New York Times and the NYU Movement Lab to film Vollmer and create models of her strokes to analyze how the body and water move together. Findings can help coaches instruct swimmers in how to move better in the water to gain speed. A motion capture session might help a swimmer learn where their strokes go wrong, and how to correct them. Continue reading Motion Capture Provides Insight into Olympic Swimmer Techniques

Racket That is Head Above the Rest

The Head YouTek IG speed MP 18/20 racket isn’t just good enough, it is a grand slam of rackets. And it is the racket de jour for Serbian tennis ace Novak Djokovic. While it probably won’t let most would-be tennis pros serve up Djokovic it should help that game at the local court.

It features an 18×20 spring pattern and makes use of the Innegra, the world’s lightest high performance carbon fiber, which forms an ultra tough hybrid-composite structure. This reduces vibration on ball impact for better control and precision.

Goal Line Adopted by FIFA

The game may never be the same. This has been said in many sports over the years, but on Friday FIFA approved the use of goal-line technology at the Club World Cup, Confederations Cup 2013 and World Cup 2014. What does this mean for the average pick up game or youth soccer match? Nothing.

But for the pros it is a game changer. It actually comes about from the adoption of two different technologies that have been approved, and both will be used in different capacities going forward. The “Hawk-Eye” essentially uses high-speed cameras and triangulation to determine if the ball crossed the goal line. It has already been successfully used widely in international tennis and cricket tournaments. The other is the “GoalRef” technology that relies on a microchip that is placed inside the ball and uses magnetic waves to determine if the ball has crossed the goal-line.
