Android Tablet That is as Hard as a Stone Tablet

Tablets are great devices for surfing the web, reading an e-book, playing a game – provided you’re careful with the darn things and aren’t actually planning to take them out in the real world. These things are as fragile as a newborn, but Getac doesn’t believe this needs to be the case.

The company has released a rugged Android tablet, the Getac Z701, which can be used in places besides an airport or couch! It features a glove-friendly touchscreen display made of Gorilla Glass, a capacitive touch sensor and LED backlighting. More importantly it was created to MIL-STD 810G/IP65 specs so it can survive a drop from up to six feet, and is certified for resistance against dust and liquid. It can even endure temperatures from -4°F to 122°F. Continue reading Android Tablet That is as Hard as a Stone Tablet

Garmin Mounts Up

It had to happen. Several companies have introduced cycle computer mounts for Garmin computers, including the Bar Fly that we noted last week, as well as the K-Edge, Quarq and 3T. Now Garmin has seen that it is likely just supporting the aftermarket when they could be jumping on that band wagon.

This week the company introduced a new composite material mount that features a hinged mount for easy installation when the insertion point for mounting the computer can be rotated. Thus the Garmin Out Front Mount ($39.99) can be used with road, mountain and even time trial bikes, and it works with all Edge devices. Mount up!

Vibrating “Ghost” Armband Developed For Athletic Training

Do athletics have to “think” about their reaction, and could performance be improved by “training” the muscles to do what seemingly comes so naturally? That remains a question to ask, but an engineering team from Imperial College London has created a wearable, vibrating armband called “Ghost,” which reportedly can train a person’s muscles and teach the user to move like professional athletes.

So instead of being shown how to swing a golf club like Tiger Woods, the Ghost makes the muscles react a certain way and through “muscle memory” the user can essentially replicate the movement time and time again. Continue reading Vibrating “Ghost” Armband Developed For Athletic Training

Bar Fly Raises Bar With TT Mount for Cycle Computers

Handlebar mounts for cycling computers are fairly common and we’ve seen a few that have been truly innovative in how it places the computer right where it can be seen without requiring the rider to take their eyes off the road for an extended time.

Several makers have road and mountain bikers covered but now the Bar Fly TT mount from Above Category will let those who are likely really moving on a time trail or triathlon bike get all the digital details as well. Instead of placing the cycle computer near the stem, where it could be hard to see when it the tucked position, the Bar Fly TT is designed to mount on the aerobar extensions, putting it right where it truly needs to be. Flywheel Me to Dubai

Hitting the bike often means working up a good sweat but even the hardest of the hardcore likely wouldn’t want to put in the miles in the desert outside Dubai, while riding in the city could mean dealing with some serious traffic. So the solution for those who want to get into the spin in the ultra-modern Middle Eastern city is to head to the gym.

Flywheel Sports Dubai has announced the opening of its indoor stadium cycling studio. The first was established in New York City in February 2010 by a team of entrepreneurs including fitness icon Ruth Zukerman; and has been designed to provide an intense and empowering cardio experience led by top-notch instructors in which each ride is a unique, full-body workout. Contour Doubles Down

While Sony and JVC have entered the rugged action camera market this year, and GoPro seems to be going towards and IPO, Contour Inc. has essentially doubled-down by announced its next-generation action camera, fitting called the Contour+2. The wearable camera will be available this fall for $399.

The form factor hasn’t been changed much, but that’s because there was really nothing wrong with it in the first place. Clearly Contour knows that change for changes sake isn’t the way to go. But while it may look the same this time around it offers a new shooting mode of 120 frames per second in 480p resolution. This isn’t close to HD by that ultra-high frame rate will be ideal for anyone who looks to do a “super slow motion” cut. The company has promised the “highest quality action video, ever.” Seeing will surely be believing. Video after the jump

Knife Light

Sometimes a little light can go a long way, such as not cutting yourself when using a knife in the dark. For those times when you’re hiking, camping or just need to cut something and don’t have access to a light – and don’t want to hold a flashlight in your mouth – the SOG Blade Light, a folding knife, will come in handy.

It employs six LED lights molded into the GRN handle, which are powered by two AAA batteries, and can provide 34-37 lumens. It can also stand up to nature as it is IPX-7 rated for full immersion in water. The Blade Light will be available next month for $85, which is far less than the cost of stitches on the hand! Shoot HD Video From the Sunglass

We’ve seen various movies and TV shows that suggest that glasses could double as a camera. Well, this is a case where science fiction has instead become science fact. The Pivothead are sunglasses that feature a small camera lens in the center, right between the eyes as they say.

This camera can record 1080p video or 8megapixel still photos. Could be useful for visiting museums and other places where photos are typically not allowed – if you don’t mind breaking the rules of course! Continue reading Shoot HD Video From the Sunglass

iPhone Bike Trainer Kicks Into High Gear

Wahoo Fitness has put a new spin on cycle training with its KICKR Bike Trainer, which can be controlled via an iPhone app. This looks a bit like the Lemond Revolution Trainer, which works much like a traditional cycle trainer but instead of spinning on a drum has users ditch the rear wheel completely by offering a cassette and gears. Resistance is controlled via the app, which also lets riders know the speed and watts produced. It reportedly can simulate different conditions such as riding uphill, where more effort is required. Mio Goes Full Cycle

At last week’s Eurobike Trade Show in Germany Mio introduced several new bicycle computers, including the Mio Cyclo 100 (above), which can record cycle times, speed, distance and calorie burn. The device features 1.8-inch display and has a waterproof casing so you don’t need to worry about getting caught in the rain – or at least you don’t need to worry about the bike computer.
