RollerSafe Promises Safe Roller Skiing

Roller skis are commonly used to train in the off-season but with one serious drawback – it can be difficult to stop. Without snow to carve into stopping can be tricky. This is why it is said that necessity is the mother of invention, because the need to stop has resulted in the RollerSafe.

These street skis utilize a wireless disc-braking system that makes it easier to control the speed and more importantly come to a safe and complete stop. This is controlled via a small trigger-based toggle that is integrated in the pole handle, and allows users to control the speed without any major physical motion besides a flick on the stick. ReadySet Generator

Turning a bike into a power generator isn’t exactly a new idea, and we’ve seen numerous products that can get juiced up from some pedal power. But now Fenix International is looking to develop its Velo Bicycle Charger to work with the ReadySet power supply system. This portable battery back can also be charged from solar panels, micro-wind and micro-hydro devices, or juiced up from the grid before you head out.

It is portable power that can be powered up and then used to power your devices. ReadySet and go.

Well Armoured

Under Armour has taken fitness monitoring in a new direction with its newly announced Armour 39 system, the first-of-its kind performance monitoring. This reportedly tracks “willpower,” providing a score that tells users exactly how hard they’ve worked during a training session. This take the usual calorie counter to a new level.

The system, which will be available next month, utilizes an algorithm that can track activity duration, body position, heart rate, intensity, calories burned and then determines what level of willpower was reached. It could allow athletes to further arm up during training.

SIA Recap: iProbe Rescue System

No there isn’t an app yet (that we know of anyway) for avalanche rescue, but the iProbe isn’t an iPhone accessory. It is actually a sensor-equipped probe and transmitter.. The iProbe ONE from Pieps features a sensor in the tip that can emit an audible signal in the handle when it gets within two meters of a buried transponder. It operates on the EN300718 standard signal for emergencies.

This could help rescuers narrow down where to dig, which can be crucial when it comes to finding trapped skiers or hikers.

ReFleece From Recycled Recycled Materials

We’ve seen much in the way of taking plastic bottles and other materials to create fleece fitness apparel, the question remains what happens when the fleece starts to wear out? Instead of it ending up in a landfill perhaps it go another step. ReFleece is a new company that is taking old Patagonia fleeces and turning the used fabric into protective tablet cases for the iPad and Kindle.

Jennifer Feller and Sam Palmer, who met while working at Patagonia, founded the company, which is made of discarded jackets. The outer shell comes from 100 percent post-consumer and post-industrial scrap fleece, which is made from recycled plastic bottles. Continue reading ReFleece From Recycled Recycled Materials

Easy Breezing

There are plenty of wearable devices that can track activity as well as calorie intake. However the actual tracking isn’t actually accurate because these devices – including heart rate monitors – can’t determine an individual’s specific metabolism and thus can’t really determine how fast one is really burning calories. While the devices aren’t technically guessing, the results aren’t 100 percent accurate, and this is why some users don’t see the results they think they should be getting. Range Finder

When target shooting a spotting scope is essential, but the OCAT System Advanced Long Range Marksmanship System could be a game changer. This system can be used at home with a laser mode, or at the rifle/pistol range with live ammunition and can be used to up to a mile.

This system works by incorporating a spotting scope with a special camera, which then connects to a conversion box and PC. This system can run several targets, and pan the scope up to 140 degrees with 15 degrees of elevation or depression. This system eliminates the need for spotters, as shooters can see the hits on the actual targets on the computer screen, and lets sport shooters track firearm and ammunition performance, while providing shooters a way to accurately and instantly learn how to read the effects of wind and mirage on long shots.

Dri+Cap Equals Dry Lens

We’ve seen many cameras that can endure the wilds, including some new DSLRs. But a little bit of humidity can still ruin a camera. So if you’re bringing that SLR to the jungles, or just outside on a humid day, have a BRNO Dri+Cap at the ready.

This special camera lens cover can help protect a camera from fungus, mold and other dangerous effects of humidity. It features a silica gel pack encased in the rear of the cap and maintains a reasonable 35-45 percent humidity, while O-rings work to keep excess moisture out as well. The packet even changes color to let you know when it is time to change the pack.

Bow Me Down

Archery is hot right now, thanks in no small part to movies such as Brave and The Hunger Games. And while getting started isn’t really that hard or expensive Canadian chiropractor Ron Green has devised a fitness game that can be used with an app to simulate shooting arrows. The result is BowBlade, which is far closer to actual archery than anything we’ve seen to date in a true video game. It works as a fitness device, but adds a gameplay element when combined with an iPhone and accompanying app.

It could be good for those who want to hone their skills, live in apartments (and thus can’t actually shoot real arrows) or just want to see if they can emulate Katniss before picking up a real bow. Video after the jump
